Have I been 'lost in the system'?

I'm hoping someone can help me out here as I'm in a bit of a stressful situation.

I had an appointment with my GP during the last week in June as I had a mole on my arm I was unhappy about. My GP referred me to Dermatology and I was given an appointment on the 14th July, just outside the 2 week target window. At the initial appointment after viewing under a dermascope it was decided it would be best if the mole was removed and sent for biopsy. The procedure was carried out on the 27th July and when I asked I was told to expect results in approx. 6-8 weeks. All 'good' so far.

On the 11th october, 11 weeks after the removal, I still hadn't heard anything so I called my GP to see if they had received any results back. The receptionist informed me there was nothing on my file and there had in fact been no update since notification of the 14th July appointment. They were unaware a second appointment had even taken place. They advised me to contact Dermatology direct. I called Dermatology that afternoon and was advised they couldn't give me any information over the phone however they did offer to transfer me to the secretary of the Doctor who carried out the removal to see if she could help. There was no answer so I left a message. By Tuesday 15th I still hadn't heard back so again called Dermatology, again I was told that they could give no information over the phone and I should contact my GP. I called the GP again and explained the situation and they said any such results they get would be 'fired straight back' to the hospital as it was a specialist area. They again advised I should contact the department direct. A further hour of phone calls, multiple messages and so on followed and I am still no further forward. Neither the GP or Dermatology department seem to know who is responsible and neither seem willing to look into things further.

I am now convinced my results have been lost somewhere in the system. I think most of us on here are aware of the stresses of waiting on biopsy results and so on and this is just additional worry I can do without, I was told to expect a wait of 6-8 weeks and we are now 12 weeks down the line and nobody seems to have a clue what is happening. Can anyone advise what to do next? I was considering writing to both my GP and Dermatology direct asking for a response in writing to advise on the situation. Is this the best course of action? Should I persist with dead end phone calls?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

I can understand how very frustrating this must be for you. Firstly, although Dermatology couldn't give you results over the phone, they should have chased it up and made an appointment for you to see the dermatologist for those results (if they were positive). If they were negative, they should either send an appointment (some consultants like to give any type of result face to face) or at least send you a letter explaining they were negative. It is not the responsibility of your GP to give you those results so they shouldn't be referring you back to your GP..

So these are your options - look on your hospital website & find the dermatology department. If they list the staff in that department they may show who the Specialist Cancer Nurse(s) is/are & give their contact phone number and email. Then ring them and tell them that you have been waiting for 3 months for your results and you are being passed from pillar to post & can they please either give you the results (if negative) or arrange an appointment to see the consultant. If you can't find the SCN contact details on the hospital website, ring the hospital switchboard & ask for the SCN Dermatology Direct Dial number - don't ask to be put through because if there is no answer you will have to go through the switchboard again, just ring their direct dial number.

If this fails (SCN is on holiday or otherwise unavailable), get the direct dial number for the relevant consultant's secretary from their website or the switchboard. If you get no answer, keep trying (sometimes you need to be a pain in the butt to get them to deal with lost results or appointments). Threaten them with going to the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) if they try to pass you between themselves and your GP again.

If they have lost your results they should be upfront and deal with it, not keep fobbing you off. Some GP's would be helpful in this situation and ring Dermatology on your behalf, explaining that their patient has been left high and dry & that their practice hasn't heard anything either. If you have a GP at the practice who is amenable and you keep getting the brush off at the hospital, it may be an idea to ask that GP if they can chase up what the situation is at the hospital & get an appointment date sorted for you - sometimes a push from a fellow clinician gets them moving!

I hope you get it all sorted out & that the results bring you good news. Be firm & stand your ground. Please let us know how you get on & don't be afraid to contact PALS if need be.

  • Wow! What a lost of stress that you just don't need right now! If it was me I would make a appointment with the original gp you seen for your referral and go and talk to them about everything that has happened and ask them to help you track down the results and get them to call them for you, I hope you get the answers you need and hope they get it all sorted for you.

please let me know how you get on !

  • Thank you for the replies.

After a few more phone calls I finally have a result. Apparently these were sent to my GP back in September and the Doctor who dictated the letter did not instruct them to send me a copy.

I have been told the mole showed melanoma in situ which I suppose is the 'best' bad news. No further action is required at the moment and I will have an appointment in February as a check up and, assuming that goes well,   that will be me.

It's been a stressful few months but all things considered it's not a bad outcome, it certainly could have been worse. Thanks to everyone who has replied to my posts on here in that time, a few kind words and some helpful advice from a stranger really does go a long way.

  • So glad you have your results now & that it was 'the best of a bad bunch'. Hopefully your check up will go fine & you will have no further problem.
