Hard lumps back of neck

Hi, last week I had a coldsore which raised a few lymph nodes. They have gone back to normal but whilst feeling around i noticed a couple of lumps near the back of my neck an inch or two below ear. Gp said they felt fine to him but to me they feel very hard and aren't going away. I've gotten myself a bit worked up and spent way too long with Dr Google. Anyway have experience with anything like this? Any reply much appreciated.

  • With nodes, anything over 1cm needs checked out after 2 weeks. Anything 2cm + needs seen to by a gp pretty much when you can. However, different areas, require different attention. Even an enlarged < 1cm node on the collarbone needs to be evaluated, as those tend to be non-palpable. Whereas some neck nodes can be larger than 1cm because they get repeated infections and once a node has enlarged, it's pretty common for them never to return to their pre infection size.

All that said, you know what's normal for you, but for some people, they can just feel their nodes and that's normal for them.

Cancers tend to be hard, fixed and non painful, and over 1cm.

1cm palpable nodes get treated as normal. So if they're around that size, the gp will be basing it on that.

Edit: Some of that post is missing, yet when i go into edit, it's there. Weird.

  • I had lump behind my ear twice in different positions and they went away and now lump behind top of neck/bottom of head. Just wondering if you have itchy scalp and red rash from itching behind neck? I have been waiting for my ultrasound for almost 9 months of so because I orginally cancelled the initial appointment due to the lump behind my ear disappearing. Had to go through the entire process again and have managed to get an appointment in 2 weeks but my itchiness is so bad and I'm going on holiday rhis week. Just need something to calm the itch for now, e45 itch relief not working.
