Hand foot-syndrome still hurts after finishing chemo...

Hi - I was unlucky with Capecitabine (as adjuvant chemo) as I got bad hand-foot syndrome after only 9 days into my first cycle.  They stopped it, gave me a two week break and lowered the dose.  I managed the next cycle but once again got red, sore burning feet torwards the end. Two weeks off again, and even lower dose.  Same thing on third cycle.    Fourth cycle was on half the original dose but after only 6 days they had to stop the chemo for good because my feet were peeling.  Thankfully the scan says I am clear despite all the interruptions and lower doses. My question is how long do they go on hurting after chemo has stopped?   It had been over 4 weeks and they still burn, get bright red and hurt if they get slightly warm or if I walk for more than about 15 minutes.  I have done everything recommended - never had a hot shower, always worn soft socks and memory soles, used udderly smooth cream....   Just wondering if they will ever get better!!???  I would like to start getting fitter again, and lose some weight that I piled on, but I can't walk anywhere!

  • Hello Sallyw,

I'm glad your scan came out clear. There's no way of knowing when it will subside. Your consultant may have a better idea and offer other suggestions to help the discomfort, but it seems like you're aware of most of the tips, which are mentioned here. It best to just try and keep the area as cool as possible.

I hope it gets better soon,
