Hair growth after stemcell transplant

Hi all, I’m 9 months out from having my first Stemcell Transplant. I still feel the effects it’s had on my body day to day. I was an avid gym goer and loved playing football. 9 months out I’m still no way near back to normal in terms of fitness but I feel I’m slowly getting there. I just wanted to touch on the topic of hair growth, 9 months on and the hair on the crown of my head is very thin, practically bald. I use to have a bushy beard and even this hasn’t grown back properly. It’s very patchy and faded, I was just wondering if there’s anyone out there who has or is going through the same process as me. Being so far out from my transplant and still suffering these problems is very frustrating for me. I understand this is a small price to pay given I’ve had the all clear but if there’s anyone out there experiencing problems like myself I would love to hear from you, many thanks for taking the time to read my problems !

Richard

  • It's lovely to hear from you again Richard and get an update on how you're doing. I'm glad that your fitness is slowly coming back to you although I'm sorry to read about the on-going problems with your hair growth.

Hopefully other members who have had similar issues will be along soon to share their experiences and advice with you but do give our cancer nurses a call next week if you'd like to chat to them about this. Their freephone number is 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I'm really glad you've been given the all-clear Richard and hope that your hair will get thicker and become less patchy soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

Iv just seen you’re post and as I’m 6months post transplant, and my hair is barely growing back. I used to have really thick hair and so am finding it really upsetting.

so as it’s a year on wandering how your hair is doing now?

    Liz

  • Hi Richard,

I'm at about your stage out of stem cell transplant as you were when you wrote this, so just over 9 months. My hair started growing back completely normally after about 5 months and was growing well for a few months. In the last month/month and a half though, my beard stopped growing in some places, making it really patchy (even though it was normal 2 months ago...) And started thinning a lot at the top of my head. Would love to hear an update on your hairgrowth??

    Thanks,

    Benjamin

  • Hi Liz,

I lost all my hair the first time I had lymphoma in 2016 and it’s never recovered. My facial hair has returned, the crown of my head just grows very brittle thin hair. I’ve had micro scalp pigmentation to give myself an all over shaven look which had boosted my confidence quite a lot. However i very much miss my full head of hair.

    thanks, Rich

  • Hi Benjamin,

My beard took several months to grow back, starting off patchy like yours and blonde (use to be brown). I started to dye it and thankfully now it grows normally. My hair has never recovered from the first time I had lymphoma in 2016. I had the steam call transplant when my cancer returned and have been all clear since. The sides of my head grow normally but the crown is very thin and brittle. Really is a confidence drainer ! However I’ve had msp (micro scalp pigmentation) which gives you an all over shaved head look and has made me feel better. Hope this helps you in some way.
