Hair Growth After Chemotherapy

I know that it differs in each individual person, however I was wondering how long it took some of you after Chemotherapy for your hair to grow back to a suitable length?I had 5 cycles of chemotherapy and during the second cycle my hair started falling out, however my eyebrows and eyelashes started falling out after my chemotherapy finished (2 months ago).

My eyelashes have started to grow back, as have my eyebrows, however the hair on my head still seems to be this white/platinum blonde fluffy cotton wool texture! I was wondering how long did it take for your hair to grow back and when it did start, when could you start styling it (like spiking it or gelling it etc)

I appreciate any reply!

Many thanks

Zoe

  • Hi

I had breast cancer in 2010 and had 5 cycles of chemo finishing in Nov. I had extremely fine hair before all the treatment started and was 62 at the time. The same as you I kept my eyelashes and eyebrows until after the treatment ended then they fell out. They grew back quite quickly but I will say that every couple of months my eylashes thinned a bit then grew back. This wore off after a while and they were soon back to normal. I wore a wig for about 3 months and my hair was long enough to 'style' a bit by the end of April so about 5 months for me. You have a big advantage over me as judging by your photo you are an extremely pretty young woman with the type of face that will look great with a short haircut !!!. I am sure you will look stunning in a couple of months x Jan

  • My wife had ten cycles of 5FU and lost the top of her crown. It mainly thinned out and became softer.. Its very slowly returning = about half returned six months on; but its slow... and seems thinner. No grey mind.

  • Hi Zoe

I do hope your hair is looking better now. Am just wondering how things have progressed since Sept as my hair looks like lumpy porridge! I finished treatment in December...

  • Hi Zoe,

I noticed that your post was August 2014 so I hope that your hair has grown some more for you.

My mum lost her hair, it was very fine though, in stands in the end she asked for it all to be shaved off. After her treatments it did grow back thicker, hers was dark grey and white on the tips, as one of her friends said it looked like snow on the mountains! :)

In terms of length I think it was about 2 years maybe more when it grew just past her chin, Been a few years since she past so my memory of the length is a bit hazy but I'm sure it was getting pretty long in a short space of time! She always had her hair died blonde so it was safe to do things to it.

    Hope this has helped.

    Take Care x

  • I believe that vitamin B helps the hair regain its condition and colour. My wifes hair is much better now - but it took 9 months - she takes - I think - Solgar Vit B complex 100. You would have to ask the nurses here first before taking it, of course.

She never colours it now - she was always blonde before = but her hair condition is good and I think dark hair suits her (mere male opinion!).
