Had mouth biopsy today, got some questions please.

Hi

I made my first post here to say hi to you all www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../hello-34

I have been using high dose 4mg nicotine lozenges and gum, about 12 times a day for a few years.

Before that I vaped, and before that I smoked heavily for nearly 20 years.

I got a painless lump where I keep the lozenge in my mouth, in my inner lower cheek. The lump is the size of a match head but grew, yet sometimes flattened when I brushed my teeth.

I saw my GP mid march who said he thought is was an athmous ulcer (SP?) and was nice and reassuring saying he didn't think it was anything sinister. He asked me to come back in 2 weeks if it hadnt gone.

2 weeks later, it still hadn't gone, so he referred me for a biopsy which I have had today.

They numbed me up and said it would be sore afterwards, but it isnt. They put dissolvable stitches in my mouth.

They said they could not tell me when the results would come, I would get a letter and/or phone call.

I have a poor diet as I have poor cooking facilities and can only eat certain foods. I've lost a lot of weight in the last few years, half my body weight.

I have some questions please?

If they find cancer, do they tell you as soon as possible?

If it is cancer, how soon would they tell me?

From member's own experience, how long do results take to come?

The waiting is agony.

Many thanks for reading this

  • Hi hope2bcancerfree

You have been brave and sensible hope your recover from biopsy well

How long did they say your results will take?

Also did you go to dental hospital or a normal hospital?

  • Hi, sorry my post was long, and there was a "read more" link. I posted to ask questions which I put at the end. I went to a maxillo facial surgeon at the hospital referred by GP

The post was to ask how long I would have to wait for the results and if it was cancer would I be told quicker?

GP referred me to maxillofacial unit at the hospital, it was bad enough waiting for the appointment and if I would need a biopsy or not.

Has anyone any idea how long results will take, as I had biopsy today?

    Thanks

  • Hi

The waiting is just so horrible every day feels like a week.

The general wait is 2 weeks or next appointment, but times are not normal with this virus hitting the nhs services.

Having read your post about poor diet weight loss etc perhaps you need to have your bloods done to check your B12 and folate levels as low levels do cause oral ulcers etc as do stomach problems, are known to cause aptheous ulcers that keep recurring. Its not a routine test so you have to request it.

Try to stay positive and know that 90 out of 100 oral biopsies are benign.

Also well done for kicking the cigs and the vaping stick with the losenges untill you are ready in yourself to wean off them. You will be saving a wee fortune, just think what you spent over 20yrs.

PS: heavy use of losenges can cause loss of appetite try to cut back to 10 or 12 if you can.

Take care and keep well xx

  • Hi [@clara56]‍

    Thanks for your reply.

I phoned the nurses on here regarding the surgeons being unable to tell me how long the wait would be, adn while they were nice, they said corona is delaying histology and path lab staff testing.

So, yeah, but times are not normal with this virus hitting the nhs services, it wasn't the biopsy that bothered me, it didn't hurt and there is a mild bit of pain but not much, hope it isnt infected.

"Try to stay positive and know that 90 out of 100 oral biopsies are benign." That gives me comfort.

I have been trying to cut down on the lozenges and gum, I think I have managed it, under non biopsy covid stress though so its hard.

thanks for your kind post, the 90/100 oral biopsy reassurance helps.

  • Hi I wondered if you could update and tell us how it all went start to finish if it's not to nosey, I went for fillings yesterday after the appointment he took me into a side room and asked if he could take some photos of the inside of my cheek for a second opinion , I said do you think it's mouth cancer he said let's hope not then probably nothing to worry about, I was completely gone from the mind at that point and took nothing else in I had to call back today to ask he said try not to worry he's sent the pics to someone from oral medicine and that I will probably get a card asking me to go for a biopsy or they may just ask the dentist to keep an eye on it, the reason I'm interested in ur results so much is that I too was a heavy smoker but have been off cigarette and on the lozenges 6 years am totally addicted well I was yesterday has just made me so ill, my mother died of cancer so I know what I could be in for , can u advise on what the wait for the biopsy the wait for the results were and give me any more information I'm worried out of my mind

    thankyou
