Does this mean good news ?

I would of thought I would have an apt at BREAST CLINIC to see consultant after my surgery?

Any rhoughts? Am confused

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Many patients now have telephone appointments with their specialist team. I don't think anyone can presume that because their breast care team is going to communicate with them in this way that they don’t have anything to worry about. Everything might be absolutely fine but you need your breast care team to confirm this for you.

Waiting when you are worried is stressful but hopefully you will find out more soon.

I hope everything turns out to be okay.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hi Twin.

  • Hello June and thanks for posting again,

I am sorry to hear your news and can understand that it can take a bit of time to process it all.

I am sure that on Friday they will spend a lot of time talking to you about what your next steps are.

There are so many treatments that are available for treating breast cancer. You may find it helpful to read the information on our website about how they decide what treatment you may be offered. Have a look here

Try not to get bogged down with reading too much about it until you know more about your results but you may find it helpful reading the link above about how decisions are reached.

The charity Breast Cancer Now has more information about this subject here

If it is possible to have someone with you when you go for your appointment that can be helpful. There is usually quite a lot of information to absorb and it can help to have another set of ears listening to what is said. You may well be allocated a Breast Care Nurse too who can help support you over the coming weeks if you have not been given one already.

I do hope that your appointment goes well on Friday. If it would be helpful to get back to us afterwards so we can try and go through things with you you are so welcome to do so.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care,

    Catherine

  • Hi

I had my 1st excisional biopsy, some  areola  removed on 3rd Sept

Then I went on mid Sept for results,  I think they said grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma.

Then I was booked in for surgery 1st Oct....they removed my nipple , they did right breast nopple/exciting wide local excision with perforator flap reconstruction of defect and SLNB,GA, they cut back to chest wall xx

Whatever that means xxxx they also did a sentinel node biopsy, they removed 4 lymph nodes xx

I hope i have clear margins and nothing in lymph nodes xxx

  • Hi June and thank you for getting back to us again,

I can understand how difficult it must be to try and understand the jargon used to describe your surgery. When they don't want to remove the whole of the breast they describe it as a wide local excision where they take away the cancer and a clear margin or area around where the cancer was. They sounded like they did a partial reconstruction. The surgeon will give you more information about the surgery that was performed when you see them on Friday.

You may be interested in reading the types of reconstructions and how they create the flaps on the Breast Cancer Now website here

You also said that you had a SNLB (Sentinel node lymph biopsy). This is where they take a biopsy of the first lymph node to see if it contains cancer. If this doesn't contain cancer then it usually means that the other lymph nodes are clear. You can read more about this procedure on the Breast Cancer Now website here

I can understand it is unsettling waiting for the results of all the different tests that you have been going through. Hopefully things will become clearer when you see the surgeon on Friday.

If you want to ring before or after your appointment then you are more then welcome. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
