Going abroad

Hi everyone...well doing well since I was last on here. Struggling too deal with the lymphedema in my leg/knee and ankle its so uncomfortable. Also the fluid between my legs is very annoying. Anyway just wanted too ask has anyone flown abroad that has lymphedema? Just I've been given the all clear too fly too south of Spain in two weeks, was so looking forward too it as had too cancel our last two holidays due too the nasty C now holiday getting nearer I'm getting very scared and worried about flying with the lymphedema and also how my leg/groin will be affected by the heat. So just wandering if anyone else on here as been abroad...thanks and love too you all xxxx

    Hi Racheal,

    Welcome back to Cancer Chat.

I am glad to hear that things are improving for you and that you are going to manage a holiday this year. I have bilateral Lymphoedema in both arms and hands. I wear compression sleeves most of the time and have manual lymphatic drainage done by a nurse specialist for 2 weeks out of every 12. Following this she manually bandages my arms twice a week from fingertip to shoulders.. I look like the Michelin Man for  the time that I am wearing them.

I have had breast cancer for 7 years and usually go abroad twice a year. I also fly within the UK with my work. When I am travelling I wear my compression sleeves. I am always careful to 'circle' my ankles around as often as I can during the flight. I also get up to the toilet a couple of times during the flight. I am careful to stay in the shade as much as possible and to raise my fet as much as I can.

I have never had any bother with increased swelling and hope that you will find the same. Have a wonderful holiday.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you for the welcome back and thank you for taking the time out too reply too me xx

Yeah i wear a compression full length stocking which goes from my toes right up too my hips which I find so uncomfortable but I guess it takes time getting used too. I think its the unknown that's scaring me about flying and going abroad and your advice is so appreciated. I had cancer of the vulva which thankfully they managed too get the whole tumour out and lymph nodes. I know you say you have lymphedema in your arms, may I ask do your arms every feel tingly and like there on fire or sometimes feel like there freezing yet not cold too touch? When you fly is it painful?  I hope you don't mind me asking you just have no-one too ask and feel a pain constantly calling my lymphedema nurse.

    Love Racheal xxx
