frustrated carer

why have there not been a cure for all cancers after all these years raising money ,   there must be some sort of cure so many lives have been lost surely there is something they can do

  • There are hundreds of cures for cancer in use on a daily basis, but sadly there are still too many cancers for which there are no cures yet.

Then again, not enough people are diagnosed at an early enough stage for a cure to be made, even when there is a cure. Tragically about 1 in 5 cancer cases are still being diagnosed when people turn up in A&E with severely ill with an advanced cancer.

Even when people visit their GP at an early stage there isn't enough capacity in the system to run all the diagnostic tests and scans within the target times set by the government. Most Trusts are now failing to meet targets that the majority of Trusts were meeting only three or four years ago.,

Not enough diagnostic staff are being trained to cope with the increasing number of cancer patients and the number of staff leaving the NHS. For example there has been a shortage of radiologists for several years now. One Trust I know was paying a consultant radiologist to commute from Germany every week as a locum because they couldn't recruit a suitably qualified and experience to a vacant post.

If all the governments of the World put as much investment into cancer research, diagnosis and treatment as they do into warfare and defence, I'm pretty sure progress would be much faster. Instead much of the research remains funded by charities like CRUK because cancer research isn't given as high priority as defence when it comes to spending taxpayers' money.

As a cancer patient, I share your frustration.

    Best wishes

    Dave
