Found lump in breast and now nipple has changed

Hello,

I went to the doctors on Monday as I had a red lump that looked like a bite but hadn't changed. Doctor checked and said its okay it's just a cyst. He checked my breast over further and found a lump somewhere else. He said he will refer me to the breast clinic, I am 22 years old so panicked. Its now the following evening and I have noticed my nipple has changed slightly and has some discharge. Should I call my GP to update them or just wait for appointment? Also, am do they phone me for an appointment or do I get a letter?

  • Hey [@pisces25]‍,

If your referral was urgent then I would just wait for the call or letter. I have heard that you will receive a phone call then a confirmation letter, however, people have said the opposite too.
Did you find the discharge on your t shirt or were you squeezing around the area? X

  • Okay thank you! Waiting is driving me insane and its only been 2 days :( I was squeezing/pressing so that might be why. I will keep an eye on it and see what happens. I guess not much they can do really!xx

  • Hi Pisces25

I'm so sorry to hear that you're worried about this, as there has been a change, I personally would contact the GP to seek further advice.

Also when you get your breast clinic appointment, you'll  usually be seen within a two week period. However if you call the breast clinic to let them know that if a cancellation comes up meantime if they could consider consider you.

My second bit of advice is don't google symptoms as this just raises anxiety. Most people googling symptoms unwittingly do so with unconscious bias and as a result search engines pull up the most frequently visited sites which are usually worst case scenario.

There are lots of reasons for lumps and nipple discharge can be linked to lots of different things like infection or cysts etc that are not the big C.

I found speaking to an advisor at Breast Cancer Now Helpline really helpful as they are trained advisors and really helped.me to understand breast health and the process at clinic and give me some perspective as I was terrified.

Here is a little bit of blurb from their website:

We provide tailored information and specialist support to anyone affected by breast cancer or with queries about breast health. Callers include people who want to know more about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer; people who’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer, their families and friends; and healthcare professionals.

The best thing is that you're taking he right steps and have been to GP and referral has been made. Take good care, let us know how you get on xx

  • Hello!!

Thank you very much for your reply! All the information is very helpful! Thank you! I will try not to google anymore as I know its really silly! I am going to contact Breast Cancer now also :) You have put my mind at ease and I will ask the breast clinic to consider a cancellation for me :) Take care and will update!xx

  • Thank you again for your advice! I called my GP and spoke to doctor who said I am on the urgent 2 week appointment list so unfortunately he cannot do anymore. Hopefully won't be long until I recieve an appointment! I tried to google the number for the breast clinic but had no luck in finding it :( Will keep updating xx

  • Hi

What area do you live in? You should get a text to download hospital letter very soon. The breast clinic number should be on there.

Your GP mentioned a cyst, so keep that in mind, it's the psychological crisis of waiting that is more than the actual unknown. In the worst case scenario, the lumps being cancerous, it will not develop further to any noticable impact on outcome in a 2 week period.

Cancerous cells take months to grow, this is why 2 week for urgent is set. Urgent doesnt mean red light worry you have cancer. It is urgent, get the person seen to ensure if there is anything sinister it can be tackled. You are very young, cancer is very unlikely.

When you get your appointment call the breast clinic and ask them to consider you for a cancellation should one come up. Definitely speak to Cancer Now advisors- I had practically gone through every horrid thought possible .....the lady was amazing and put my mind at ease.

At my appointment at the breast clinic today (cancellation) I was given all clear, despite every symptom pointing to the worst. Xx

Its dealing with your head that's the hardest part while you wait. So please remember 2 weeks is nothing in terms of C cell growth. Unlikely to be C and it is routine to send you to breast clinic for urgent (all urgent but not) pathway. You have a good GP xx

  •  I am so pleased to hear your results are clear, thats amazing! :)

I live in the South, thats good to know about the text! Hopefully it will come through.

That is good news about cancer cells, I never knew that! Glad to know it won't get worse over the next few weeks if it is that!

Have been looking on cancer now's website and it was really helpful, will give their helpline a call! I am impressed with my GP, its really nice to know they will go out of their way for you!

Thank you so much for your help, you have really really rested my mind, so thank you for taking the time to comment! :) I will keep you updated on what happens!xx
