  • Processed and red meats are a contributer to cancer, research has shown. Also, there is some evidence to suggest that too much salt can contribyte to stomach cancer

  • Hello Emma S

I  am one of the nurses and I hope that you do not mind my replying to your question. But if you have not already seen it, I can direct you to information on our website that may be useful.

The link between diet and cancer is complicated.  But doctors do know that people with less healthy diets are more likely to develop it. Very few specific foods have been directly shown to cause cancer or greatly increase the risk of developing it. But studies have shown that eating a lot of red and processed meat may increase the risk of bowel and stomach cancer. While a high salt intake could increase stomach cancer risk. Saturated fats might also increase the risk of breast cancer.

The types of foods that we eat may also reduce the risk of cancer. There is quite a bit of evidence which suggests that eating a diet that is high in fruit and vegetables reduces the risk of developing a number of different cancers.

If you are interested in reading more about diet and cancer risk and the evidence behind the claims we have some detailed information here. If you click on the blue link you will be taken to a page which also has links to information about the role of other factors in the development of cancer. For example smoking, drinking alcohol, being overweight and exercise. All of these things have a role to play in the development of the disease.

I hope that this is of some use.

    All the best,

    Jean
