Food during chemo

My husband was diagnosed 6 months ago with advanced bowel cancer. His chemo and treatment are going well but since the introduction of immunotherapy his taste has gone haywire! His mouth is very sensitive and nothing he eats has any taste - even to swallow is difficult - it makes him heave!!! He is very frustrated and wondered if anyone on here has any tips??!!!

  • Same happened to me, taste and appetite went and mostly couldn't physically eat. Trial and error showed there were some things I could tolerate though, so I just ate those.

First it was chunky beef and vegetable soup - that lasted a couple of weeks. Since it's been chicken and mushroom, which I now can't eat and then chicken soup which I've been able to tolerate and enjoy for the last year. Now I eat the soup, the odd bit of fish, chicken, liver and potatoes.

Because of my diet and some weight loss, I'm also precribed banana flavoured ensure drinks, so my weight is now stable.

Basically then, the advice is to find anything that can be tolerated and have it often, adding other things as and when.

    Best Regards

  • Haha thanks so much - will try this. Its mostly sweet things he can tolerate but this changes from chemo to chemo!! He is a chocoholic and when it eventually tastes ok he eats the whole block of chocolate. He also loves curry but even a korma burns his mouth :(

Good luck to you - will try some of your suggestions x

  • Similar to me re the sweet things but if that's all that's tolerable at a particular time, then go for it. It'll no doubt change in a few weeks and then something else will be flavour of the day.

As long as calories are going in it's good.

I read that cachexia, weight loss, finished 40 to 60% of cancer sufferers; no way was I going down that road if I could help it.

  • There are already some good suggestions - basically whatever he can keep down has got to be good. Just keep trying different things in small amounts. I switched to full fat milk and made a lot of homemade power shakes with banana, peanut butter and fresh fruit in various combinations. Also adding grated cheese to soup, mashed potatoes etc. is a good way of getting extra calories and protein in.

Luckily I never went off cake and chocolate ;-)

    Good luck

  • Hi Pam

like Davek I never want off chocolate or cake. I went right off coffee and tea but found I enjoy fruit teas and lady gray tea which has a citrus taste. Croissants and danish pastries became a favourite. Also chillies (which I love) were a staple. I bought lazy chilli and it and garlic went in everything. Although that might not be good if his mouth is sensitive.

Afraid it's just trying things really
