FIT test results 10.2????

Hi everyone, new to the forum and looking for some advice if anyone could help I recently had a FIT test carried out with a full set of bloods as I've had 3 or 4 episodes of slime/ jelly substance come out (with small amounts of red blood) few hours after my bowel movements. To clarify this has only happened 3/4 times over the last 12 months so very sporadically! I do have haemorrhoids however again they very rarely bother me. My bowel movements apart from this are completely normal and regular. All my blood results came back completely normal along with my inflammatory markers however my FIT test was positive at 10.2 and I've been referred for a colonoscopy. I'm 43, very active (don't smoke) and not overweight so am curious as to what this might be or if anyone could advise as I don't have any other symptoms? Obviously my fear is that it's something more sinister  I was advise by the doctor the slime issue is more likely to be some sort of irritable bowel condition and the FIT test could possibly be haemorrhoids or polyps as cancer doesn't present with slime type symptoms. Thanks in advance for your help

  • At 10.2, it sounds like they are being ultra-cautious. I believe 10 is the cut-off between a negative and positive result and if you look around this site, you'll see people with results like 400. 10.2 is really borderline and while I am no expert, I doubt the difference between 9.8 and 10.2 is going to be really significant. (I have read that a FIT test under 10 makes bowel cancer...not impossible but highly unlikely.)

I will say that about a year and a half ago, I had regular rectal bleeding (like on a near daily basis for week on end), some weight loss (about a stone or a stone and a half in a year), occasional loose stools (maybe once a week) and trapped wind. I was forty at the time and the specialist said that given my age, the odds of its being bowel cancer were less than 1%.

Given that you also have a FIT test that is only very slightly above being negative, haven't mentioned weight loss and already mentioned having hemorrhoids, which are likely to cause blood in the stool, which is what a FIT test tests for, I'd say your chances of cancer are a good bit lower than mine. I had a GP tell me there was no sign of hemorrhoids and they still turned out to be the cause in my case.

It really doesn't sound like cancer is any real risk for you. The hemorrhoids likely explain the blood and your doctor said the slime isn't a likely symptom. Most likely, they are checking to rule out polyps or conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohns.

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply, it certainly helps hearing about your symptoms and what they may possibly be looking for over and above cancer. Thanks again. :)
