First oncology appointment

I had my lumpectomy a few weeks ago now and have my first oncology appointment tomorrow. What should I expect??

Thanks

  • I have mine on Thursday this week and was wondering the same . How are you feeling after your lumpectomy. I had mine also 3 weeks ago . Ready for the next hurdle

  • Hi, I’m feeling good most of the time. Some days just a bit more “nippy” than others but not too bad.

What about you? I see you are waiting for chemo? How do you know already?

Hope you’re doing your exercises! ;)

  • I seen the consultant ten days ago he has been saying since the start of my diagnosis that I would have 6 sessions of chemo and then radiotherapy, I’m hoping the oncologist is going to say different . I’m not doing too bad now was painful the first couple of weeks but getting easier now . The damn exercises lol

  • Oh, chemo was only mentioned to me after seeing the consultant and the results were back from the lab. He got a clear margin and no spread to lymphnodes but grade 3 >:) So I think I’m borderline for chemo. Sort of hoping I don’t need it but wondering if I didn’t get it, would I be able to settle?? Weird feeling either way!

  • Exactly the same the same as me grade 3 , clear Margin and not spread to lymph nodes . Yeah I know the feeling it’s been a hectic month for me not sure how I would feel either . Good luck tomorrow let me know how you get on .

  • At my follow up with the consultant post surgery he said he thought I would be offered chemo, but the oncologist would make the final decision. Oncologist appointment was on Friday told it was yes to chemo !!! probably 2-4 weeks until it starts, had a call from the chemo co ordinator today and am booked in for next week!!!

Oncologist gave lots of info, print out on the chemo drugs I will be having.

I think you get a lot more info from the chemo nurses when you are invited in for a meeting before your first session.

    Good luck for tomorrow

  • Hi Mariake,

I was quite nervous for my first oncology appointment and had loads of questions. The oncologist was great and took a long time to carefully explain my pathology results, why he was recommending chemo, what impact this had on my survival stats (using Predict). Also explained how cancer can spread or recur and why they do chemo and radio to reduce these risks.

It was a lot to take in so I had a second appointment to go through the specifics of my chemo (FEC-T) including all the possible side effects and what to do if you get a fever etc.

I found it quite reassuring to meet with the oncologist and I hope this is the case for you too x

  • Thanks everyone I’m heading over for 1.45pm today.

Im sure all will be fine either way. I have a good result from surgery so this will just be something else to kick it into touch!

  • Great attitude... my thoughts exactly when I had to have a course of RT after 2 surgeries for vocal cord cancer. Better to get it all done and dusted and annihilate any remaining nasties in the beginning rather than have it drag on over months / years. Hope you’re on the road to a full recovery.

  • Thanks for all the good wishes for today. Unfortunately,  I am not really any further on as the oncologist has decided to do a test called Oncotype DX.  This will determine if the risks of chemo will out weigh the benefits and vice versa. So another 2 weeks wait for me.
