Financial stress and breast cancer

Hi,

Last week I was diagnosed with breast cancer I am 34 years old. I’ve gone back to work this week and finding it a struggle as I can’t concentrate. I need to work as we need to pay the bills and basically we arnt able to get any sort of benefits or help. My husband is on just the uk average wage. We have a Son who is coming up 4.

when I go on the sick I will get basic sick pay around £90 a week. Our insurance doesn’t cover me either only if I die.

I am selling my horses as I can’t afford to keep them while I am undergoing treatment and probably sell my car to save on tax insurance ect.

I am having surgery 1st then maybe other treatments they aren’t 100% what that will be until all my results come back. How long did people with breast cancer take off work? And how did you cope financially?

Regards

Kay

  • Hi Kay,

Hopefully some of our breast cancer ladies and other cancer members will pop by to offer you their advice and support soon but whilst you wait I just wanted to point you in the direction of the coping practically section on our website as it has information on financial support and money matters which may help you and your husband at this time.

Macmillan have financial advisors you can talk to, so maybe you can give them a call next week to see what advice they can give you about your situation as well.

I hope you're able to get the support you are seeking and wish you all the best on your cancer journey.

    Kind regards,
