Exhausted

Hi, This is my first post. I am 68 yrs old and  I had a large tumour removed from my bowel 2 years ago, followed by 8 courses of chemo.  I have coped with it pretty positively as my father had bowel cancer and I had always sort of expected it to happen to me and when it did my attitude was "OK here it is now let's deal with it".  i have had my 2 year check and all seems good I guess as far as you can ever say.

What I would like to ask if anyone else is suffering such extreme tiredness.  I sleep and eat well but every day I am hit with this exhaustion .  Not just feeling tired but like being hit with a sledgehammer and I just need to go to sleep.  Fine if I am at home but when out it is very hard to deal with.  I have had blood tests and all is fine so is this just something normal following chemo .  I have been told that sometimes you never get your energy back but this is so bad it is interfering with life.

Now looking back at what I have written it seems a minor thing with so many of you dealing with so much more, so I send my thought To all of you and I really do believe that my positive attitude did help me to deal with this all.  I hope that maybe I can help someone else on this site sometime.

  • Hi Jayne, welcome to the forum. I can relate to the extreme exhaustion that you feel as I too, am having the same problem. I am a little older than you, but I had a colon re-section 5 years ago followed by chemo and I thought I would never fully recover from the exhaustion that followed. I did eventually, but then have had a few cancer diagnoses since then that I'm dealing with. I know part of my exhaustion is due to low iron and I am taking iron supplements for that, but chores that I used to do regularly now have to be planned ahead of time and I have to space them out over the week to get them all done. I have always been a very energetic person, but not anymore. I think now that it goes with the territory. In any case, we have to do what works for us I guess so that is what I try to do. In your case, I hope you get your energy back soon so you can get on with your life as before. If it continues though, I think it would require further investigation with your doctor.

    Take care and keep posting.

  • Hi Lorraine your reply has given me heart to go with it and stop worrying.  Like you I am having to plan things ahead and pace myself which isn't the way I operate!  So sorry you have had more problems and I guess that is the cloud we all live under after the first diagnosis.  You sound a very positive lady so stay with it and a big hug to you.
