Esophageal cancer

Hi my mum has recently started treatment for Esophageal cancer. Her treatment is chemo, surgery and more chemotherapy. She is considering not having surgery which is her only option due to other health conditions. All of the family want her to have surgery, how can I help and support her?

  • At least she has been offered operation my husband has same cancer and its too far gone to operate prob fear is holding her back keep reassuring her she will be OK hope this held its so difficult we have been told its terminal x

  • Margoogram - thanks for your response and  really sorry to hear about your husband. It definitely is fear that she won’t survive the op which is scheduled in 6 weeksish.

  • I pray mum will take this chance they would not do op if they thought she wouldn't survive we will all be rooting for her positive thoughts x

  • Hi Georgie, orry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis.

She certainly wouldn't be offered surgery if it was unsafe - it really is quite major surgery. I think that it's important to suport your Mum in making the right decision for her and I know that may be difficult for you as a family if she doesn't want to have surgery.

Macmillan has some really good advice for talking about cancer that you may find helpful.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Georgie, I think when they first give you the diagnosis it is quite a lot to take in and I for one reacted in the same way as your Mum, the operation sounded like one massive step too far. What really helped me was going to a meeting at the Maggies Centre at the hospital run by the OPA group, there I was able to talk to patients who had been through the same thing and I found this an enormous help. Also like Rich said they wouldn't offer you the op unless the odds are in your favour. I had my op at the beginning of December, and although I have had a few up and downs since, I can honestly say that I have never regretted my decision. For me knowledge was power and the forums like this one helped very much.

I wish your Mum and all the family the very best.
