enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi @DaveW1970 ‍  @Littleoldme ‍

Thank you for your replies. I know you are both right, I think I just needed someone to tell me that! I know if I didn’t go and the swelling persisted I would be kicking myself. To be honest I think I’m just scared, I’ve been putting it to the back of my mind and now that it’s tomorrow I think I’m just having a little panic.

Sorry to hear your symptoms are persisting despite the tests. I think that’s almost more frustrating as you just want an answer and a plan to move forward with treating the symptoms.

I hope they get to the bottom of both of your symptoms. Sending positive thoughts your way.

Thank you again for replying, I appreciate the reassurance from you both.

Hi guys,

Thought I would give an update as I have been for my scan. I have a 2cm cyst on my thyroid on the right hand side which she said looks non suspicious. She also found a nodule on the left hand side which is only 1cm and so she said that’s non suspicious due to the size. She said she took lots of pictures of the left side (I presume to have a further look before writing the report to my GP). She said I may be referred to ENT for further reassurance /checks of the left hand side, I may be asked to get scanned again in a years time, or I may be told no further investigation is needed. I’m guessing my GP will contact me with the outcome of that in due course.

Feeling reassured (I think). Just wish they’d found nothing but I’m happy she’s saying nothing looks sinister on her first impressions!

Thank you to everyone, this thread has really been a saving grace for me. Xxx

Hi Scotland,

This is fantastic news. If you are referred to ENT, please attend your appointment to totally rule out anything sinister.

I am absolutely sure that your family will be equally delighted that all is good and, will in no way at all begrudge the money spent on your scan.

Do please keep us updated if you have any further news.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Thank you both!!

Yes I will definitely attend ENT if I am referred.  I almost want to be referred as I read that anything 2cm or over should be investigated further? I also have questions about what the results means and if I can do anything to shrink the cyst as it looks blooming awful!!

Will the GP contact me once the report has been sent to them from the private consultant?  I just haven't had very good experiences with my GP (he initially refused to pass my referral on privately eventhough I had already been referred for an ultrasound through the NHS), so I fear he will just not follow it up as I presume she is going to say a follow up isn't 100% necessary?

Looking back I wish I had asked more questions.  I was just a bit overwhelmed with relief and now I am confused.

Hope all is well for you both xx

Hello little old me.

I have been reading the posts and I was waiting for the diagnosis.

If it's 2 cm and the person who did the ultrasound is not concerned I would take that as it has been investigated already.

If she refers you to ENT doctor that's better because you will be checked but trust me there is not point on thinking more than that.

2 cm is smallish.... Do you have any fillings in that side? Any dental problem? Because that could be one reason.

Keep on top of your appointments because that will mean that if there is ever anything there they will see it.

I have a lump under my jaw that I see massive and when she measured it it was 11mm so not that big.... She said she is not even going to send me for biopsy so I try to trust them because they know what they are doing.

A few months back I had an ultrasound in my abdomen and she saw something suspicious and send me straight away to the urologist. It was a tumour in my kidney that was cancer.

So if they would have seen something suspicious it flags up straight away.

Be positive and let us know!!!

Hi PositiveJ,

Yes you’re right, the lady was a consultant radiographer who scanned me and she didn’t seem concerned at all so I am reassured!

The cyst is in my thyroid so I don’t know if that would be due to dental work as it’s nowhere near my jaw? But I did have dental problems so maybe it is linked!

I’m glad I went as I now have a baseline just incase anything does change, and I will definitely attend any follow up appointments if need be!

I’m sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis, it definitely puts my situation into perspective.

Sending you lots of positive thoughts! X

Hi all, I hope you don't mind me joinging you.  I've got a lot of swollen lymph nodes all over (neck, jaw, collar bone and groin) and notice that a few of you here also have widespread lymph node swelling - have any of you had any conclusive answers as to the casue?

I noticed the lumps about 8 weeks ago, although they could have been there for longer. I saw my GP a while ago who told me to return in 4 weeks if they were still raised, so I'll be seeing her next week.  Just feeling very anxoius that whatever this is could be quite advanced due to how widespread it is.  Not sure what I'm really hoping to acheive by posting here, but would just be nice to chat to others going through similar.

Hi Becky,

Sorry to hear you have widespread lymph node swelling. Are they fairly small lumps?

I also had the exact same, in all the same areas as you, but its about a year now since I first underwent the initial investigations and posted this post! I hope it may give you some reassurance to know I still have all the same lumps in the same places over a year on from when they appeared and they were thought to be fine after very thorough investigation. It is a very worrying time though when you are faced with the unknown. When is your gp appointment next week? She will likely send you off for some tests but when/if this happens try to remember it doesn’t necessarily mean they think you have cancer, but its important they are 100% sure.

I too was worried about widespread disease, in lymphomas they say that the “stage” of the cancer isnt as important however as its not solid tumors that form as it is a blood cancer. This means that even in widespread cases it is often treated successfully.

Let us know how you get on with your GP and make sure to ask them as many questions as you need!! xx

Thank you so much for replying SunshineEm, really appreciate it Happy Great news that you're okay! It is really reasuring to hear that yours have turned out to be nothing sinister, but it must have been a very worrying time for you.

They are fairly small, I'd say mostly around 1cm or just over with a couple of slightly larger ones maybe 1.5-2cm. They are non tender and feel quite firm.  I've done a lot of goggling (bad idea!) and I've not managed to find many people at all with such widespread nodes, so it was good to read your posts.

My GP appointment is on Tuesday so I'll report back after that.

Hi Becky,

2 years ago I had enlarged nodes in my neck, armpits and groin and now they are enlarged in my neck and right armpit (as has been the case for 10 weeks or so). In both cases, they have been tender and quite small, however. My main concern is continuing night sweats and slight deterioration in my eyesight (I’m on the way to the opticians now for a dilation test.......travelling by bus!).

Have you had any other symptoms beyond the node swelling?

I wish you all the best in getting sorted and I’m glad to hear Scotland’s reassuring news. Fingers crossed that proves universal for us all.

Hi Dave, sorry that you’re experiencing this too. How did your eye test go?

I’ve had bad headaches and eye pain and muscle twitching for a couple of months before I noticed the nodes were raised - no idea if it’s related or not though and is slightly better now. I’m quite achy and feel a little more bloated than usual - quite vague and mild though so again, hard to know if there’s any connection.

my nodes aren’t sore- I think that’s a positive if yours are as more likely to indicate an infection? Did you ever find out what was caused your swollen nodes previously? Did the eventually go down or have the stayed up since then?

Hi Becky,

Like you, I have an ENT appointment coming up (a follow up in my case) and I think I might ask for a head and neck scan to make doubly sure my eyesight issues and tender nodes aren’t linked. I also have very mild tinnitus noticeable more at night, so I’m wondering what’s going on! The dilation test went OK, but my prescription has deteriorated a fair bit over 12 months and now it looks like I’ll need more than just reading / VDU glasses.......hopefully it’s just a result of me approaching 50!

My original node inflammation subsided over a couple of months back in spring 2017, but this year’s ‘fun’ is still on-going although now slightly less severe than it was.

Being an engineer by trade, it is not in my nature to just shrug my shoulders and assume it’s a viral infection. I want to know root cause and why it’s recurring (if related to my 2017 issues). It seems to me that, if it’s confirmed there’s nothing sinister going on in my head or neck, I must have some sort of autoimmune disorder, and if so, I will want this confirmed and guidance on how to keep it in check. I’ve been below par for weeks and weeks now and I need to hurry up and get well so that I can get running and cycling again - otherwise I’ll need a new wardrobe at this rate!
