Earache post radiotherapy

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

5 weeks ago my mam finished a 4 week course of radiotherapy for stage 1 laryngeal cancer.
she has had the usual side effects and has been extremely unwell however thankfully she now seems to be having more good days than bad.
she is complaining of intermittent pain in her right ear, tbis only started post treatment. I was wondering if anybody else on this forum had experience of this?
The ENT team didn't seem to concerned and feel it's likely just a result of the high dose radiation and everything settling down.
many advice/reassurance would be much appareicated

  • Hi Jack and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry about the side effects your mam has been experiencing since finishing her treatment although I'm glad the good days are starting to outweigh the bad.

Hopefully some of our members who have had a similar experience will share their advice and experiences and with you soon but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses then you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope the pain starts to subside for your mam soon and that the rest of her recovery goes well.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi my daughter in law started to experience awful ear pain 6 months after radiotherapy,  she is taking morphine in small doses every 4 hours, and inbetween paracetamol,  she has also been taking another pain killer which seems to be making her put on weight( a good thing). Now the pain has moved to the other ear ,and she just cries so much.  Today she has seen a pain specialist at the hospital, who have r ecommended a higher dose of the pain killer ,and a weekly talk to see how she gets on. Will this pain go eventually , and has anyone else suffered like this.

  • Hi MIMSY,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I just wanted to send a reply to say this discussion hasn't been active in a few years, so you may not receive a reply here, but you can always create a new discussion on the forum if you'd like to.

It's good to hear that the specialist is helping, and I hope that things ease soon for her.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi there I'm the original author of this post/discussion

things do get better but it does take a long time & pain relief is part of the process. I'm now 18 months post treatment but still have periods of mild to severe ear pain.

the ear pain is probably related to ulcers, my worse pain was months after treatment & my oncologist prescribed morphine patches which were helpful at nighttime but I found shots of oramorph & cocodamol to manage the days.
i hope she start to turn the corner soon

    best regards

    james

  • Thankyou for your reply, i will pass the message on.

  • Hi James,   Thankyou for the reply,  I have suggested to my daughter in law to look online, it will give her comfort to see how other people have coped.

  • Hi. I finished radical radiotherapy for throat and neck cancer 15 weeks ago but for 7 weeks I have had a serious bad pain in my ear. I take 2iburofen and 2 paracetamol every 4 hrs. I came off morphine as it was making me ill, but I would like to k ow how long shall I expect this to go on
  • Hi there - I'm afraid from my own experience I had earache for pretty much the following year post treatment. I found cocodamol to be effective pain relief & oromorphe & cocodamol when it was acute in the 16 weeks post treatment.

don't lose hope we all heal at different rates - my oncologist told me that my reaction to radiatiotherapy was extreme and progress slow compared to others. I'm now coming up to 2years in remission with no ear ache - still swallowing with a bit of difficulty, please do keep up your mouth stretching excerises an do challenge yourself eating!
hope you feel better soon & turn that corner!

    all the best

    james

  • Hi I'm suffering really bad with earache since I had radiotherapy for throat cancer, I am constantly trying all strong painkillers but nothing eases it off. It started 8 weeks after radiotherapy and still here 9 weeks later, like you the hospital doesn't seem concerned but the pain is unbearable. I've been unable to get out of bed gir 6 days now. I don't know what else to try. I had a biopsy on the 30/11/2022 on a painful ulcer in my mouth. I've now been on morphine patch for nearly 3 days yet pain has not moved can anyone suggest what other painkiller I can take with these paths and if it's not worked for anyone else.

  • Ask your GP for some morphine patches this will help.

try & keep on top of your pain relief - I know it's hard !
