Ear Canal Cancer

Hello everyone i hope you are all keeping well in this unsual time, it seems so long ago since i posted about my cancer, i was diagnosed with cancer of the ear canal back in November 2019 after living such a health life this was a great shock to me. In January 2020 i underwent major surgery and had the cancer removed from my ear alongside everything else in the ear lymph nodes also removed in my neck and soft tissue from my leg replaced in the ear and some of the jaw the operation took 11 hours in total but i was told it was a success and they managed to get all the cancer, and no cancer in the lymph nodes but i would require Radiotheray to blast any cells that the naked eye could not see, so my six weeks of radiotherapy started on the 4 th March and finished on the 10th April 6 weeks tomorrow and i feel that i am recovering well. I have been discharged from the hospital who did this and am now back with my hospitl team, i have had a telephone review today with the consultant who feels i have progressed really well and will telephone again in six weeks, if any change i must contact them, when i was at the hospital i asked them if they would scan my ear and they said no as it would look inflammed and would be on no benefit, I also asked the consultant today and he said you have had the surgery and the radiotherapy and we got all the cancer so there is no benefit to scan you currently but i am worried if there is any cancer left i remeber one of the consultants saying to me we will monitor you every couple of months and then it will get longer as time goes on then every 4 month 6 months etc should i insist on a scan when i have my next consultation or am i being paranoid thank you in advance

  • Hello Teresa1,

It's great news that you  have recovered so well! It sounds like what the consultant told you recently is really reassuring which is fantastic. We have information on this page on ear cancer as well as a page on treatment for cancer of the ear canal here which includes information on follow ups. I think if you are worried still, it would be worth bringing this up at the next consultation and mentioning that having this scan would reassure you at this stage. Do mention that you were told by one of the consultants that you would be monitored every couple of months. Don't hesitate to talk to your consultant about anything you are worried about and I am sure they will be able to answer any questions you may have.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - so do give them a call if there's anything you would like to discuss with them. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will also hear from others here who have had a similar diagnosis before and that they will come and share their experiences with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Teresa1

I dont know if you are still on this site but thought I would reply just in case,

I have had basal cell for over 20 years which has always been managed but now cancer has been found in my ear canal, i had one operation to remove it a month ago and as the margins were not clear am having to go back in again 01.06.2021, was this the first operation you had  as per 21.05.20 or did they try to remove it previously then have to have a more radical procedure, i've found this is ike being on a walk but not being able to see round the corner, i have been offered radiotherapy as well but took the 2nd surgery option 1st as this was the call I got from the hospital to book the 2nd surgery before I had had my follow up with the consultant, Sue
