Don't know how to access CT results

I moved for uni and registered at a new GP. Before this I had an ongoing issue my GP at a different city was following they were the ones to refer me for CT scans. A week since that I had called my old GP thinking I'd be able to access it but they said they can't access it (receptionist) since like i've been unregistered from them which I didn't know happened probs automatically. called my new GP and they said to call the CT scan hospital. hospital told me it's my GP's responsibility to follow up and that they can't send it to my new GP only to the GP and specific doctor that has sent me for it. so now its been 2 weeks since the scan and i just thought that because it'll get sent to my original doctor who was following the issue surely they'd call me with the results. I forgot what the nurse said at the hospital if i'll get the results mailed or called.

  • Hello cats-coffee and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about all the confusion going on with your CT scans.

Hopefully someone who has been in a similar situation will come along shortly to advise you on which steps to take but until they do, I thought I might leave you with the phone number for our team of nurses in case you feel like they can help. They are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

    With best wishes,

  • Hiya, i work in this field.  Transferring people to new gp's. During and around September, we're inundated with students moving the length and breadth of the country and registering with new gps in other health boards.

What should happen, anything sent to your own gp should be moved to your new gp. It's the Healthboard/trust that does this, not your GP. If that hasn't happened, call your old surgery and request this is done. But it's ultimately the responsibility of your new GP surgery to make sure they have requested your records. It used to be physical letters and records, but it's all digitalised now, so get them to get the ball rolling. They'll send it to the new  healthboard/trust, and the health board sends that information onto your new health board. It should take mere days. not weeks because, yeah, it's all digitalised.

A problem with hospital and gp records, they are 2 separate things. but anything sent from the hospital to your gp should automatically now be added to your records because like i said, it's all digitalised. You have a unique NHS number or CHI number (if you're in Scotland) and that doesn't change whether it's gp or hospital records. If you've moved from England to Scotland or vice versa, that can and will take longer because they use 2 different systems. But correspondence gets filed under your NHS/CHI number, not with the referring gp.

One thing you quickly learn when you work for the NHS or run into an issue, there's absolutely nothing "national" about the National health Service.

  • Yes I would say that's absolutely correct- call your new GP and ask them to request your medical notes be sent to them.

The problem now is the results of your CT will be sent to your old GP surgery, who when scanning the documents into your file will see that you are no longer their patient. I wonder what will happen to the results? Possibly they are obligated to send on to your new GP? I'm not sure the protocol.

If you don't get any joy- ask your new GP surgery to send you for another CT SCAN and try to stay in that area while you are going through tests and getting results. Or an alternative is re-register back at your old GP (you might have to visit them during the week while they are open to do this) and keep there while you are going through tests.

  • thank you! i'll definatly call my new GP and ask to access the records

weirdly i;ve now been booked for an phone consulation 3 weeks from now and i am a bit worrried just because it seems v soon i was warned that being seen by a specialist would take months as there's a waiting list. it's as if its for something urgent but no one is telling me its urgent so im left confused

  • i'm sorry to update this again but ive contacted boht GP's and both dont have them even tho the hospital has booked for me to be seen urgently .... are they witholding the scans?

  • Hi,

    This is all very confusing.

First of all your GP doesn't normally get your scan itself, they normally get a report from a radiologist saying whether or not anything unusual was seen. The same applies to your consultant. You have a right to receive a copy of any letter about you sent to your GP. In my experience as a patient, I normally get to know the results either face to face or, since Covid started, via a phone consultation well before my GP does!

Second, don't get hung up trying to second guess what any change in the speed with which or the way you receive results means. I worked for a long time in the NHS and believe me the processes are anything but smart. Like a sausage factory, the scans or samples goes in one end and the results are reported  out of the other with little or no human intervention. Good news or bad news almost inevitably follow the same, often frustratingly slow, process.

    Good luck with your results!

  • hi! thank you for your reply. I hope at least the gastroenterologist can tell me whats on the scan. what makes it weirder is that the scan was a chest and neck not a stomach one so i thought td be referred to a neck and throat doc maybe

  • Not exactly same but in 2018 I had a CT scan privately which the doctor at hospital now want to get hold of to see if I am at stage 4, the orginal CT results I got told verbally but got lost between GPs and hospital, suspect by GPs as loads of things got lost there.

Anyway hospital at now said for me to get hold of them from GP, said GP does not have them, so they said they could not request them (though a doctor said they could so who knows). I emailed old consultant no reply. I them messaged the private hospital and their digital dept or something like that name called back and said they could send me the disc of it and my records to home address by recorded delivery, also said could e-mail them to current gp though now just sending to me.

The first ones often go to your consultant first if you have one, if there is an issue you generally get allocated one as far as I know. Maybe also phone them and update your GPs details on their system. If there is a big issue they normally phone you or invite you back so no news is normally good news though always have to check not just lost.

  • There is also something like a right to access to your medical records form you can get, not sure of name, but you can request copies of tests etc think in past 6 months to come to you. Can't remember details, maybe PALS told me.

  • Okay so the place that have booked me in with the gastreontologist didn't get my scans- theyre a different centre. I phoned the hospital where I did my CT and they told me they haven't finished the report and they'd sent it back to my old GP which is fine since I know they share records so I can still access it at my new GP. I guess maybe the scan is more complex than I had thought so it's going to take 3+ weeks for them to complete the report i don't know
