Does time of appointment suggest result???

I've just found out I have an appointment for biopsy results next week. Every appointment I have been to so far has been in the morning but his one is at 4pm. It would make sense to me that they do the "bad news" appointments in the afternoon when hospitals and clinics are quieter... So I guess I am wondering if anyone has ever gotten good news at a late appointment or even bad news at an appointment first thing in the morning??

The wait is going to drive me round the bend!!!

Thanks in advance is if anyone has any insight :)

  • Don,t know if this will help,my results confirming breast cancer was morning as they wanted to do further tests while I was there.Later on they thought my other breast looked suspicious so had further tests,my result appointment for that was 5 o,clock, but all was clear,so don,t worry x

    Hi Wendii,

I don't think that it makes any difference. I have had two bouts of cancer one year after the other. The first one I got my results in the morning. I then had another scare requiring a biopsy. Fortunately this was non-malignant and I had an early afternoon appointment and my appointment for my second cancer was again in the early afternoon. As Jipster said, the consultant often wants to run further tests with a positive diagnosis.

Waiting for results is always one of the worst times in the cancer journey. Try your best to distract yourself from the wait by keeping yourself busy.

Please let us know how you fare next week and remember we are always here if you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine and Jipster - I know it's a weird thing to fixate on but you have both put my mind at ease!

its good to know there are people out there I can say these mad things to, I haven't told anyone other than my husband about the tests and he's a bit of a typically closed off guy so i am very grateful for this forum.

  • Hi

I dont think it makes a difference. I got mine at 3pm but before that my consultant and nurse were have a meeting with another hospital about me and other patients. I know it easy to say don't worry but try not to. I am in control with my cancer and will not let it win. I have cervical cancer stage 2B. Just try to keep yourself busy. I am lucky I do 12 hours shifts as a carer in a care home but saying that after Sunday I am going on 6 hour shifts.

good luck and let's us know how you get.

    Anymore questions ask away.

love this site and the people on here are a great support

  • Hi,

Anyone who works in Appointments in an NHS hospital would probably say sigh and say "if only"!

I can understand your concern, especially whilst worrying about what such important news might be, but the NHS is struggling with record levels of cancer referals and diagnoses that services struggle is to fit all the appointments needed into the available time slots. I received my own bad news very early in the morning, the only time my consultant was free that day.

Part of this is actually down to improvements in cancer service outcomes. On average people are living longer (hence more likely to develop cancer), being diagnosed earlier and surviving for far longer than they did even five years as go.

I hope you receive good news during your appointment.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Unfortunately for me, my theory was right. I was the last person of the day - sitting in an empty waiting room is weird. I have cancer and now they look at making a plan. Feel quite numb now. Glad I have found this forum though.

  • Hi Wendii

I had a core biopsy on breast and was given 4pm for results. They tried ringing me a couple of days before results to change the time to 9.30am. I mentioned that I'd had some missed calls but couldn't get through on ring back and was told that they had wanted to see me at the start of clinic to give me results as it would be quieter, so late appointments are not indicative of bad news. X

  • all my tests were classed as urgent (within a 2 week time frame) and all were around 4pm -5 pm, when i asked why so late in the day they told me they always have some late sessions available for referral like my own, so my major city hospital late appointments are for doctor referrals or further tests required by the consultant which need a 2 week turnaround

hugs i know the feeling i was told i had cancer last week just waiting for staging now, i find the waiting is the hardest part

  • Sorry to read about your news, sorry for the delayed reply as I was away. My cr@ppy news was given at 8.50am, before the Dr who gave it had even had a brew. Whatever time of day, it's never welcone.

    I hope things go well.

  • Hi,

Just curious when you had your results appointment did you have to wait? I had a phone call today (Friday) (assume my results are back now) and said i have an appointment on Wednesday late afternoon. My thought immediately is that if i have to wait when they have results that it wouldn't be bad news as they would get me in quicker.
