Docetaxel (Taxotere) and nail varnish!

So I have to have dark nail varnish for the whole time I'm on Docetaxel (Taxotere).  I picked a metallic black.

Safe to say I'ver never painted my nails before and it shows :D

Think I'll get the mother-in-law on it tomorrow!

  • Metallic black really suits you - definitely get the mum in law to try it too! I do think black nails can be very elegant I used to paint mine black (and all sorts of artistic designs) in my teenage years. I no longer have time to do it though...

Nice ring too by the way ;) I also have a very similar one!

  • Lol, that was me when I was 15! Used to drive mum nutty spending hours practising, but I soon got used to it. It's too expensive visiting nail salons.

Dark varnish will stain your nails if left on for long. So if you're trying to cover effects of treatment, be aware that just wearing the dark varnish will discolour the nails, unless you use a base prep coat first. Sometimes even that doesn't work.

You could google nail varnish corrector pens, I believe they are useful for removing little mistakes. Of course, I don't need them these days. :)

Try not to varnish the cuticles, as the nails grow the varnish can stretch them a bit. Hopefully your mother-in-law will give hands on advice.

    Hope the treatment goes well.

  • Thanks gamechanger,

Good tips there.  I've always bitten my nails due to anxiety but it stopped when I got the cancer diagnosis, so my nail care experience is non-existent!

I do like the dark, I'd never be a pale or pretty colour girl anyway and I think having such pale skin helps too.

Going to look into the pen idea!  I did put a clear coat on underneath so hopefully that will work as a base coat.  Glad I'm ambidextrous or it would all have been worse I'm sure :D

Thanks for the tips on my very 'superficial' cancer-related problem!

  • You're welcome. Anything that makes you feel even a teeny bit better is worthwhile. I'm ambidextrous these days, partly thanks to annoying my mum all those years ago.

    The black does look good.

  • I never went black, but my nails were painted any combination of dark plum, red, dark blue and even dark green all the time I was having chemo (carboplatin and pacliataxol). Deciding which of my daughter's extensive nail polish collection I was going to borrow next certainly made the whole process slightly more interesting!

  • Have you tried the Nella nail varnish? I have some it’s easy peel I think.

  • I haven't even heard of it!  I've gone onto Nails Inc as they appear to have a well coloured set that was apparently themed for Christmas, so 6 bottles now dirt cheap with deep plums and midnight blues.

Hopefully the 9 weeks will be it, I don't see me wearing nail varnish after that so the 6 bottles should get me through I imagine.

Thanks for the tip though, if I end up back on chemo again next year (possible) I'll keep an eye out for Nella.

  • Did this stop any damage to your nails? I have had 2 of 3 rounds of docetaxel and worried my nails will still end up damaged?

  • I had 3 rounds of taxotere and painted my nails a dark plum shade to try and help.  My nails were in the best shape ever and grew lovely and long and I got lots of compliments from the nurses!  Unfortunately after I finished the chemo they started turning white.  I cut them short to stop them catching but eventually I lost nails to some degree on all but my little fingers (from the top down rather than the nail bed up).  They did grow back eventually but have never been that good since and don't grow that long.
