Do you have to ask for life expectancy?

Hi everyone,

My mum was diagnosed with womb cancer 3 years ago but had a recurrence found at the beginning of this year. The disease is incurable but she was having chemo as palliative treatment. Her last chemo was cancelled because her tumour markers had gone up and instead she had an urgent scan, as this probably suggests the chemo is no longer working. Tomorrow we meet with the consultant to discuss the next steps.

I want to be realistic. Mum can't have anymore radiotherapy, HRT didn't work for her and now if chemo has stopped working then there probably isn't much more they can do. What I want to know is, will the hospital tell you 'your life expectancy' or is this something that you'd have to ask about?

I'm really petrified of losing my mum and seeing her in pain (she's been okay up to now) but I just want some idea of what we are playing with her. Are we talking years or months etc.

Thanks so much for any help and advice.

All the best x

  • Hi

im so sorry to hear about your mom, my thoughts are with you. I feel like it's a living grief with this type of outcome

When my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer we asked the oncologist how long. My gosh what a shock. 4-6 months without palliative treatment or a year with. He's opted for treatment but he's not well

So the only person who can answer your question is the oncologist or nurse attached to your mom

Sometimes prognoses are only ever approximate and some people survive far longer than expected.

Just try to make memories with your mom. As hard as it is try to make her smile. This time is so precious
