Do shadows on the lung often turn out to be cancer? any help appreciated!!!!

All of this has happened to me within the last week! The Dr sent me for blood tests and a chest xray - as a matter of urgency (according to my Dr) i have been referred to a specialist. The xray revealed a 'shadow' on my left lung. I know that a simple xray is not 100% diagnostic but i cant stop thinking about outcomes, from it not being cancer to having weeks to live! I cant begin to deal with this until i know what is what. It's this damn waiting!!!! Even a diagnosis of cancer would break this waiting and wondering - I feel i am in some type of limbo. It's the uncertainty Do these shadows often turn out to be cancer? Ive had a cough for months, get night sweats and i feel so old at 40 - tired and fatgued. Ive smoked for ten years, stupidly x

  • Thanks so much for your reply my love! Yes its bloody horrible waiting isnt it! It's all i can think about - sounds like you are the same too. I know this sounds strange, but for me, not knowing feels worse than being told ive got cancer. What do ya tell people? you cant say 'ive got cancer', just i that you might. But then i worry about worrying people if it turns out to be ok. I've had to tell work as ive been off for a few weeks. Its like a living nightmare isnt it?

  • Well thats the thing Hales - the balls in their court now and waiting for the specialist to see me. What about you? What is next? Youre right about things feeling worse when ya dont feel too well on top of it - bless you, you have a new baby too! That must be even worse for you.You must be under quite some strain.

  • Hello, sorry to meet you here on this website.... but we are all here for you and will try to answer your questions and support you whatever your outcome.

The worring and waiting is really so hard, we have been through this too, all with very different outcomes.

You see i have stage 4 lung cancer myself, i am a 49 year old woman, i have never smoked in my life, also never had a cough, no pain in my chest.... no night sweats, not tired, looked the same, no weight loss.

My only problem was a limp and terrible pain in my hip, if you read my posts you will see for how long.

I just wanted to let you know that what you are experiencing is not automaticaly the worst case you are thinking of.

I hope that you are seen very soon and your tests are all sorted out as quickly as can be, please dont think the worse just yet, other things can be causing these symptoms you are having.

Look after yourself and try to surround yourself with positive people and stay strong.

Good luck i hope you do not have to wait to long now, thinking of you, Debbie

  • Thanks so much Debbie - your reply was very kind and positive - i guess its human nature to feel anxious, especially when you dont know for sure what path your life is going to take. The advice regarding being with positive people at this time is one i will pursue and makes total sense. Thank you for your post and thank you for being so kind - that in its very self is comforting!

Take care - hope to hear from you again and my best wishes go out to you x

  • I so hope things go well - same day results is a very good thing isnt it.

I was told on the appointments line Thursday evening that i may hear something tomorrow - this Friday - about seeing the consultant - ive been going to check to see if a letter has arrived and keep eyeing up the answer machine lol. So glad your kids are keeping you positive, although i'm sure you have youre moments too. Please post something to say how youre getting on. Its amazing how this forum can help make you feel less lonely - there are some lovely people in this world still and its up-lifting to experience genuine care and concern from strangers who have no agenda, only kind concern.

Hope all goes well love - god bless ya and keep ya chin up.

  • HI Guys,

the waiting is always the worse.... you feel like you can cope with anything, when you know what it is..

But the no knowing is what does you in.... and that is because you imagine all the worst case sinarios...... Nothing the doctors can tell you will be as bad as you imagined it to be.

I wish I could make things easier for you both... but unfortunately I can't....... but I can be here and try and help you keep sane util your tests are done and your results are in.... There are a lot of people here who will help you.. if you let them

Please feel free to come in and ask any questions and discuss any fears you have

We will be here for as long as you need us

  • Hi, my doctor sent me to the hospital when he thought it was a clot in my lungs, they did an X-ray and it showed a shadow on lung. They kept me in to do a ct scan next day, started me on heparin just in case. Had my ct scan and it was pneumonia. Fingers crossed for you.
