Do biopsies hurt?

Hello, I have been referred to the breast clinic for a lump under my nipple/areola. I'm not sure if they will biopsy it for sure but I want to prepare myself incase they do. What I want to know is does it hurt? I'm petrified of pain... even though I have had 3 children  and it makes Me nervous even more because I have to go on my own! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Xxx

  • I had biopsy of breast using the mammogram as the area would not show up on ultrasound. So I had my breast squashed flat all the way through.

I still didn't flinch. They give you a local anaesthetic.

I didn't even flinch. The nurse held my hand but I was fine. No big deal. Also I realise that any test is there to help me in the long run.
    Dont worry

  • Thanks for asking this question as I'd like to know this too! I have an appointment this Weds coming and I'm expecting a biopsy will be needed so I'm worrying about that more than the results!

All the best for yours x

    Hi Mumma and Syl,

I endorse Benedict's experience. I Have has 2 bouts of breast cancer and a number of false alarms in the past 11 years. On all occasions I had an anaesthetic and an ultrasound guided biopsy, which I hardly felt at all.

You normally have to wait 1-2 weeks to get the results of a biopsy and it can leave the breast a little tender for a while afterwards.

I hope that all turns out well.

Please let us know how you both get on and, remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks for your reply @jolamine. Will pop back Wednesday and let you know x

    Hi Syl,

I hope that all goes well for you on Wednesday and look forward to hearing from you then.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi [@Jolamine]‍ and [@Mumma123],

I've just got home from my breast clinic appointment. I can confirm the biopsy is not at all painful. Just a bit uncomfortable with the pressure but that was all.

@Mumma123, all the best with yours- the lead up to it is worse than the actual procedure.

    Hi Syl,

Many thanks for your update. I'm glad to hear that your experience was the same as Benedict's and mine. As you say, the lead up isworse than the actual procedure - fear of the unknown is an awful thing.

Have you been told when your results will be back? I hope that they don't take too long. Please let us know how you get on. Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you again for your reply. It means a lot.

Yes the fear of the unknown is horrible. And that's still lingering for the results a bit.

They have said 2 weeks, I have to wait for an appointment. She did say it would probably be a virtual appointment aswell. I will update again once I have had my results.

    Thank you xx

    Hi Syl,

Yes, it'll be a worrying 2 weeks. Try to keep yourself busy to help pass the time.

I look forward to hearing your results, but am keeping my fingers crossed meanwhile.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi syl and jolamine

Thankyou for both getting back to me, I am currently 6 days into my referral still waiting for an appointment, I guess with the pandemic even though urgent I could still be waiting some time but hopefully not too long.

[@Syl85]‍ glad you have finally been seen and I'm glad it wasn't painful, I'm wishing you the best with your results, hoping that it will all be ok for you! Keep busy while you wait and I'm sure the time will fly by. I'm absolutely terrified of even setting foot in the breast clinic, all I know is it's a one stop so any tests will be done. Straight away, albeit biopsy results(if a biopsy is needed) will take longer to receive.

just a question for you and @jolamine, did your lump move at all in different angles, when I lay down I can barely feel there is a lump there, and tonight when I had a feel it wasn't so much on the surface but I had to push harder to find it?

    good luck xxx
