Diet , there are so many confusing things

I know that after my kidney cancer surgery in may, the reality of it didnt hit me for a couple of months, it all happened so quickly basically from the first exam .. blood in urine to the operation within 2 weeks... since then ive had 2 CT scans and a pet scan, I have an 11 mm nodule in my left lung, which showed up on the pet scan at 1.5 which is very good , but obviously

I am still being monitered, my last scan was 2 weeks ago, no change which was again reassuring , my next CT scan is March next year.

But how do you get advise about diet , Ive asked my doctors and they say eat a balanced diet which i have been to some extent , except ive googled to much ..

prior to breakfast I am eating at least 6 crushed garlic cloves and Washing them down with green tea... then I luiqidise strawbwerries, rasperries blueberries and that usually is a pint at least... I then an hour or so later might have some sugar free cereal or organic porridge with skimmed milk,  lunch maybe humus with another 4 ot 5 cloves of garlic and some salad made into a sandwich or a couple of wholemeal rolls, mid afternoon juicing carrots and ginger a pint.. evening meal fish in breadcrums salad baked potato more garlic .. plus a cup of tumeric with black pepper olive oil and cider vinegar its not the easiest thing to drink ...you get the picture, plus an occasional scone with spread , No alcohol no sugar biscuits cake ice cream etc etc .

Then I read about a week ago about palm oil and how bad it can be for us, so out went the breaded fish, the bread , the bread rolls everything that had the hint of palm oil.

The trouble is now ive dropped 3 lbs in the last week as my intake of carbs is practilly nil.. although I still have plenty of energy, but also coupled with the lack of carbs has been extra stress as I have 5 friends with various stages of cancer and one this last week is very very ill...

This might be to much info... I saw in the shops some fresh cranberries so for 3 days ive been luiqidising them in the mornings

this has resulted in extra runs to the loo starting at 6 am in the morning, and visits there a few more times during the day, so im stopping those now, which also could be part of the weight loss as they have had quite a bad effect.

Today ive cut out the cranberries , had a chicken slad wrap, my garlic fruit etc etc

So now im looking for advise as to what exactly is a balanced diet for someone living with having kidney cancer....

  • Hi Alan

My Mum had a kidney removed many years ago (not cancer related) and eats what anyone would eat, she does not drink (but never did) but has several glasses of water a day.  She is fine and has no problems regarding her remaining kidney.

As to the cancer part if your doctors have not said to avoid anything specific then I would think a normal diet - meat, fish, chicken, veg and fruit would be fine.

The last thing you need to do is lose weight (especially if you cant afford to) you need to keep your strength up and energy levels normal.

If your cancer was down to life style then you can change it but if its genetics or bad luck there's not an awful lot you can do.  Try the cancer fighting foods and avoid others but do it in moderation - you seem to be going all out. Some friut with your breakfast cereal, cider viniger and olive oil on your salad as a dressing or olives.  If I ate that much fruit I would be in the bathroom all day.  And all that Garlic - I cook with garlic most days, always have done but 6 cloves for breakfast !

We should all avoid the "bad foods" but you do need all the food groups and these include sugars, carbohydrates and protein so make sure you get some of each preferably in unprocessed form.

  • Hi  Thank you

My Ct and pet scans on the 11 mm nodule have been good no change and thankfully no ther signs of anything else.

Ive googled to much i think. im going to take your advise and alter my diet to include some more protien and carbs , all unprocessed .

I think my weight loss was due to the cranberries and cutting out carbs totally,

I just want t0 get back to my normal 14 stone. lack of carbs and the cranberries raw have

I am hoping been the cause of the 3 ilbs weight loss plus some extra stress

Thank you so much for your reply

  • Hello Alan,

After reading your post I thought I might stop by and send you some of the info we have on sugar and diet.

While this is a promising field of research, there’s no good evidence that cutting out sugar (or any major food group) is of any benefit to cancer patients. It’s important that patients having cancer treatment are eating enough to help them through treatment and recovery – you might find this blog post interesting http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2011/11/01/what-should-you-eat-while-youre-being-treated-for-cancer/.

The idea that eating a lot of sugar helps ‘feed’ cancer cells and fuel its growth is a myth http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2014/03/24/dont-believe-the-hype-10-persistent-cancer-myths-debunked/#sweet-tooth  and oversimplifies a complex area of research. All cells, cancerous and healthy, use glucose for energy and they get this from lots of different types of food in our diet. But the way that cancer cells convert glucose into energy (metabolism) is often different from healthy cells, because they grow so quickly. Understanding cancer metabolism is a promising area of research, and scientists hope they can exploit these differences to selectively starve cancer cells or boost the potency of other treatments without affecting healthy cells.

If you want further advice, the best person to talk to is your doctor or a trained dietician. After treatment our advice is that people follow a normal healthy, balanced diet – find out more here: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/diet-and-cancer/how-to-enjoy-a-healthy-diet.

I hope this helps a little. If you feel like speaking to our team of nurses please give them a ring, they are available from 9am to 5pm Monday-Friday on this telephone number: 0808 800 4040.
