Dealing with fungating wounds?

Hi everyone,

I have been seeing the nurse at my GP surgery for a few weeks to have my fungating wounds on my breast dressed. It started with honey patches, then moved to honey on gauze, then a honey wound care ointment all these helped mask the smell and it was great. Now the hospital have told me to swap to a carbon type dressing to help with the odour as I was getting more wounds which were starting to leak and smell. I find these make the smell seem worse as I'm not allowed to use adhesive dressings over the top of it because my breast is swollen, the skin is pelling off. They seem to think the adhesive dressings is making it worse. I have been given pads which just sit in my bra which I seem to leak through within an hour, through the bra and top. So when I go out I have to make sure I keep my coat on as im not sure what state my top will be in if I take it off. The smell is there contantly now, even in the shower it never goes away.

I know my oncologist said the chemo should help it heal a bit and then I face surgery to have a mastectomy but what do I do in the mean time?

Has anyone been in the same situation and how did you manage the leakage/smell problem?

  • Hi there ... I'm also a breast cancer lady ... 7 months post op ... I can't help with your problem but maybe "ask the nurses"  may have a few tips or point you in the right direction ... McMillan have a help line Monday to Friday , they may help too ... But try to keep strong ... My masectomy wasn't anyway near as painful as I'd imagined ... So sending you a vertual hug .... Our nurses may pop on tomoz but if not they are back Monday .... X

  • Thanks for your reply,

I will try posting to 'ask the nurses' monday morning. I'm also glad to hear that your mastectony didnt hurt as much as you had imagined.

    Hi Pauline,

I am so sorry to read of your predicament. Chris has given you good advice. The number for the nurses on this site is 0808 800 4040. They are open 9.00 - 5.00 Mon - Fri. This number is Freephone from a UK landline.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer. The first was 8 years ago when I had a lumpectomy. The second was 7 years ago when I had a double mastectomy. If it is of any consolation to you, I  found the double mastectomy less painful than the lumpectomy.

The various honey products are usually good at healing. I am sorry to hear about the bother you are now having with the carbon dressings, but hope that you can make some progress with your wounds shortly.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Holden,

Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to hear about the sores on your breast and, I am glad to hear that you have an appointment to see your practice nurse tomorrow.

Most of us on this site are either cancer patients or are looking after someone with cancer. We do not have any medical training, so unfortunately, cannot answer your question. I hope that your practice nurse can give you someidea of what is causing this.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
