DCIS - nipple loss

My 2nd lot of biopsies have thankfully come back benign so my breast surgeon has now back tracked on me having a mastectomy .

He wants to do a lumpectomy but during this there is 50/50 chance that I will need my nipple removed as the DCIS is just underneath it . I may also need radiotherapy .

Funny enough I have this found  hard  that I may or may not have a nipple after surgery .

Are there any other ladies on here who have been in this situation .

Any advice ?

Kind regards

  • Hi Sara ...

I've had a total massectomy so no hope if keeping boob or nipple .... But I saw a program on t.v about someone who got a nipple tattooed on her breast... It wasn't perfect but looked really good and made her feel so much better ..

    Hope that helps ... Chrissie   ; ))

  • Thank you Chriss for your reply .

When I thought I was having a mastectomy and reconstruction I think in my head I had a false idea of what it would look like . A perfect boob shape with no scaring on it only underneath and I had planned to have a nipple tattoo . I now know this is not how they look as I have now looked up images .

The vision I had with having my lumpectomy / nipple

Removal was half a nippleless boob with a massive scar across and no reconstruction or nipple tattoo.

It does help to know that I can still have a tattoo after having this done .

I know the problem is in my head as really having all the cancer removed and being alive is more important .

    Thanks again Chriss

    best wishes

    Sara

  • Hi ... There's a lot of us breast cancer lasses on here ... And how some of them got through was the same as me ... Just keep in your head your getting that nasty lump taken out of your body ... And if we are still here and kicking cancers butt ... Well do it .. cancer may knock us down... But we'll have all those feelings , then stand back up , look it in the eyes and trade it blow for blow ...

It's like being on a rollercoaster ride you can't get off ... But look around, and wer all there with you ...

  • My scare is about 4 cms from the left side of my nipple towards the  outer edge. The node scar under my arm is a similar size. I had surgery last August and both ar white lines now altho he’s done a better job of tidying up

my boob than the lymph node but that’s under my arm so can’t see it.

I have no personal experience of nipple removal but my cousin was in a similar position to you, she had hers removed because of where the lump was. She is now planning to get a nipple tattoo’d on. She’s talking about one of those 3D one’s.

  • Hi Sara, I’m still awaiting surgery -lumpectomy. My surgeon wanted to do a breast reduction which meant moving my nipples but there was a chance the nipples would not take hold and therefore I could lose them. I decided against it on that basis so I can see where you’re coming from. However when I told my surgeon the reason why he said he can make me new ones.  the procedure is nipple reconstruction, they can make a nipple and areole from your tissue. perhaps you could ask your surgeon if you’re a candidate for this?
