Dad's Prostate Cancer

Hi,

We got my 85 year old Dad's results on Friday.  We got to see the scans. We're shellshocked.  His pet scan showed his bones were completely full showing that the cancer has spread to his spine, ribs, arms, pelvis and hips.  His left hip being the worst along with compression of more than one vertebrae in his spine.  He is getting one course of radiotherapy tomorrow for the pain in his left hip.  Can anyone advise how long it would have taken for the cancer to spread so far and what is the life expectancy?

thanking in advance of any help

  • Hi eileemay sorry about your father, oh welcome to the forum,. After one corse of radiotherapy is your father having any more treatment. (as a guess I would say your father has had C for 9 months to a year), a lot of times Dr don't find C pacients go in for something else, with treatment your father could live a lot longer, has C gone anywhere else. Mine was lymph nodes, spine, ribs and pelvis & 1 lung, still have in bone lung clear now found C over 3 years ago. Best wishes,

  • Hi eileemay,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. My dad was diagnosed about three years ago now, and he is doing well today. My dad has it in all of the places that you have listed it I believe. There are many treatments available for cancer this advanced. My family were shocked when we heard the news because my dad was always the healthier one out of all of us.

It is difficult to say life expectancy because everyone reacts differently to treatment, every body is different. It is also difficult to say how long it could ahve taken for it to spread, as his cancer could be fast growing, but it could have been slower growing too. It is difficult to say.

Please continue to post on here if you have any questions or you can think of anything else you want to say. Please keep us updated on your dad!

  • Hello Again,

Dad had 1 radiotherapy session yesterday.  We meet the Macmillan nurse today as now it is just palliative care he will be getting.  Dad has been in ill health for the past 27 years after suffering a heart attack.  He also suffers from COPD and a few other illnesses.  The cancer in his bones has started to eat away at their structure and various vertebrae are showing signs of collapse and we have been given the yellow card with what we have to do if signs of MCSC begin.  In himself he says he hasnt got long left.  He doesnt think he will be with us at Christmas.  Are there any questions we should ask the nurse today?

    thank you

  • Hi eileemay again i am very sorry about your father best thing to do is talk to him any thing and everything,,main thing he's not in pain, that's the trouble with C you don't know you've got it till something else goes wrong then they find it,, remember he's in the best place for good care, might be good food as well, best wishes,.

  • Hi eileemay,

It sounds like your Dad has been through a lot over these years. I am sorry to hear that he will be going into palliative care. I am not really sure what to ask the nurse since I don't have experience with a family member being in pallaiative care. Maybe there are some other members that will be able to answer your question.

Please keep us updated on here if you would like, as I would like to know how your dad is doing. Just try to live each day to the fullest you are able, and I'm sure your Dad will appreciate you being there for him. I am sorry I can't really help with any advice.

    Take care.
