Dad has lung cancer ( This is my first post)

Hi all I don’t really know where to start really as it’s all been very quick. Dad phoned to say he had lung cancer! A large mass on the lower right lung and a smaller mass on the left and need further tests this was on the 5/3/18, I was angry at the fact he didn’t tell me he had this appointment with life changing news and very upset with news he give. Ebus procedure on the 21/3/18 they took quite a few samples but could not get them all I believe they took one from each lung and one from the lymph nodes in the chest and then today he had his PET scan 23/3/18. I don’t know if it’s me being paranoid  but all these tests have happened so quickly we also have an appointment for Monday at 1430 to get his results. I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

thank you xx

I am so sorry to hear of your dads diagnosis,my dad and husband both had lung cancer and in both cases the doctors were very quick to arrange scans , biopsy’s etc which can feel overwhelming especially when you’re just trying to cope with the news, however the quicker the better so they can make a plan concerning your dads care whether it’s chemo, radiotherapy or palliative .if you can go to the appointments with your dad to take in all the information as your dad will still be in shock and not be able to take it all in and do ask questions while you’re there .

    stay strong and positive

  • Hello carys768.  Sorry that your dad has cancer but pleased you have come to this forum.  It is not uncommon for cancer patients to not tell their families straight away.  Some are in denial themselves and others don't want to upset their families - I know it doesn't make sense because the family has to know and like yourself may be more upset by the delay in passing on the bad news.  angelpink is right; try to go to your dad's appointments with him; before you go make a list of questions to which you want an answer and write down the answers you are given.  Because it is so distressing you might otherwise come away unclear of what has been said and also thinking "Why didn't I ask this or that".    Do come and tell us what happens on Monday; of course you don't have to do this if you don't want to but (a) we are interested, and (b) every person's experiences teach us something which may be helpful to others in the longer term.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Thank you all for your support.

We have had dad’s results today he has (T4 N4 M1B) they said it has metastasised to the lymph nodes. The Biopsy results were negative so he has to have a needle guided CT to try again,I’m a bit speechless with it all to be honest it’s a lot to take in when your sitting in that room, dad also has emphysema and Interstitial Lung Disease the consultant said it would be difficult for the guided needle biopsy as the interstitial lung disease is scaring? So this carries risks, dad is still deciding if he wants it done but without put it he won’t know what type of cancer it is and what treatment is available. With the interstitial disease the consultant also said that chemo and radiotherapy could affect it and make it worse, My dad and I are so very confused with it all xx
