Coronavirus letter - lymphoma in remission

Hi,

I was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2017 and have been in remission for 2 years.  I received a letter from the NHS saying I was in the extremely vulnerable group and I should shield myself for the next 12 weeks. I was surprised to recieve the letter as my last chemo was in Feb 2018 and my consultant last year said my immune system was back to normal. I tried to contact my consultant but got through to my nurse who wasn't sure why I received the letter.  I have 2 young children at home and I don't want to isolate from them if I don't need to.

Has anyone received this letter and has been in remission for a few years? Have you managed to clarify things with your consultant?

Thanks.

  • Hello hotchocolate,

I’m sorry I can’t give you detailed information about whether you should be considered vulnerable, but the criteria for cancer patients is carefully defined, based on those with greatest clinical risk.  Some patients may receive a letter because they have other conditions that place them in the highest risk category.

If you’re unsure of your risk and what measures you should be taking, or you don’t think you fit into any of the categories listed on the government website, you should speak with your hospital specialist.  If this is not possible, you should contact your GP. Aside from cancer treatments, there are other conditions and factors that can make people more vulnerable.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
