(Confused) R-Chop for premalignant tumours?

Hello there

I've posted in this forum 2 weeks ago about my mum having a lump stuck in her ribs. Back then, while we were waiting for the biopsy report to know determine if the tumour is benign or malignant, my mum constantly thought about giving up treatments as the solution offered to her is too risky for her age. We're worried that she may fall into depression and at a lost of what to do.

Last week, the doctor suddenly called for her to make her way down to the hospital while I was working, because the biopsy results came earlier than expected. I wasn't informed and had only learn about the results from my mum herself when I reached home. Mum was very cheerful, she said it was premalignant and there is no plan for surgery at the moment. The doctor advised chemotherapy to shrink the tumour. She also added that her condition is "nothing serious" so she would only require 1 cycle of chemo (for a week) and follow up 3 months later.

I've received a letter from the hospital with her chemotherapy appointment/ schedules and it turns out to be quite different from what mum expect. The letter said that she will be undergoing 6 cycles of R-Chop, with 3 weeks break in-between each cycle. I'm really worried that mum is keeping something from me, or that she has not digest what the doc said the last time hence what she told me might not be as accurate. I've tried contacting the hospital but couldn't manage to reach the doctor in charge..

I was just wondering.... is it common to have R-Chop as a treatment for precancer? From what I've found online, they say it is mostly used to treat Non Hodgkin Lymphoma.. and having 6 cycles of it may not classify her condition as "nothing serious".. I'm at a lost of what to do since I couldn't reach her doctor, and my mum is really cheerful so I should try to be optimistic so as not to affect her..

  • Hello annie846,

Thanks for sharing your story and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand why you are feeling confused and feel you need some answers. We have some information on our website on R-CHOP here which mentions that it tends indeed to be a treatment for Non Hodgkin Lymphoma. I hope you can manage to get in touch with your mum's doctor and that they can explain everything in detail for you so that you get a bit more clarity as to what it all means.

Hopefully some of our members will be along soon with some thoughts based on their individual experiences.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation.  Lucie is right R-CHOP  is only given to people with a type of cancer called Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

It could be that your mum has not taken in all what was said to her by the doctor she saw, which is very understandable.  If your mum wants to understand more about her situation and she gives you permission you could try contacting her doctor's secretary via the hospital switchboard.  I wonder if the letter has information about who she could contact if she needed more information, perhaps someone called a nurse specialist.  Also if your mum lets you,you could also speak with her GP who may be up to date on her diagnosis.

If you are able to do so, try and go with her to her next appointment as this will hopefully give you a much better idea of what she has been diagnosed with and why she is being  treated with this treatment.

You would be welcome to give us a call. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care
