Confused and worried

Hello everyone and please excuse me if I seem to ramble it’s the first time I’ve ever had to deal with anything like this.

My dad has just been given the new that he has stage 4 M1(?) esophogas cancer that has metastasis in the liver, lung and stomach. They have given us the news that he has 2 months left- but had ordiginally said up to 6 months.

My confusion is that they say the cancer has actually cleared from the original site of 2015 (esophogas) but is now in the three sites mentioned before. He had radio and chemotherapy in 2015 and we were pleased that it cleared it.

4 years later and with other health implications treatment is not suitable and we have been advised that palliative care is the best option.

He is currently showing no symptoms no pain or breathlessness (maybe a little weaker than he was at the end of last year but we lost my mum on New Year’s Day so had put this down to grief)

I just want to know what type of symptoms should we be expecting as the original cancer site is clear? Should we look for symptoms of liver cancer or lung? Or stomach? Or none of the above?

Just to say we only found out about this when dad got his mews a fortnight ago. He’d not known as he’d notnbithered about his own health while mum had been so poorly.

Ihope ive posted in the correct place

  • Hello

First of all I want to say I am sorry to hear your news, this must have come as shock to you all. Having been through cancer as a carer, there are many things that you may be told which are so confusing. You say that your dad is fit and well and has been given two months to live. How I now interpret this is that your clinician has estimated you have two months to make memories, visit places and do what you need to do before his needs become more complicated. He may well have a lot more life left but less of it will be spent "living". My advice is dont waste any time. Get your things done, have your gatherings, visit the seaside whatever makes him happy. Don't wait and see. I hope this helps in some way.

  • Thank you so much for your reply and yes I totally agree with you just taking each day as it’s comes with dad right now.

    Thank you again xxx
