Conflicting results

Hi

really hoping someone can help me, I’ve looked in all forums and can’t find anyone with the same situation as me. I am 25, never had any children yet and had my first smear six months ago which came back with severe abnormal cells and I had to have a colposcopy. At the colposcopy the specialist explained that it appeared to be CIN2/3 but only in a small area so hopefully it won’t effect my chances of conceiving or carrying if I had it removed so I agreed. . It took three weeks of dread but I go my results and it said that the biopsy was conflicting with the smear results and that they were going to discuss in the end of month multi disciplinary meeting.

I called the specialist which I couldn’t speak to as he wasn’t busy, I spoke to my GP as I read this as something really bad hasn’t happened. They said to just wait for the result of the meeting to come back.

So a further four weeks of dread passed and I called because I couldn’t wait any longer and it was decided the following was the outcome;

’we have discussed your case with our pathology colleague on the multi disciplinary meeting. You had a loop biopsy of the cervix following high grade cytological abnormality which reported as no evidence of CIN and HPV changes only. On review, your cytology test (smear), confirmed moderately normal abnormal cells and histology did not confirm any evidence of CIN. It has been decided that you need to come to the colposcopy clinic for a smear test and HPV test in 6 months time.’

I do not understand this at all. I’ve asked the doctors and they said it was the best outcome but haven’t elaborated, presumably cause they don’t have time to and I’m ok. But all I keep thinking is someone somewhere has messed up and I may have cancer.

Ive made myself ill with worry. I can’t even get out of bed in the mornings at the minute. I have just bought my first house and got engaged and all I can think about is this. Why do I have to go back in 6 months if nothing was wrong? Most people just go back to the doctors in a year or three but I have to go to the clinic which makes me think they have messed up.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks in advance.

    I’m not an expert but used to work in gynaecology as a nurse. It is quite common for results to be discussed at a multi professional meeting. It sounds like the cells were pre-cancerous cells - abnormal cells that may (or may not) develop into cancer at a later date. That is why they are seeing you again in 6 months to keep an eye on things . That’s a good outcome because it’s not cancer , but they are keeping a close check on you just in case there are any changes. I would speak to your GP to check what I am saying is correct
