Complex ovarian cyst

2 Nov 2017 06:41

Hello everyone,

i have just been diagnosed with a ‘mildly’ complex 2.7 by 2.1 ovarian cyst. ( I’m not sure how something can be mild & complex but that’s how it’s described)

my only symptom is  one incident of post menopause bleeding, which is why my GP referred me for an ultrasound. I am now awaiting the results of a ca125? blood test but I’m out of my mind with worry.

No risk factors for OC & none of the main symptoms, but still convinced I now have cancer.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

thank you x

Hello Bridget and thanks for your post

When cysts are seen on a scan they are either simple or complex. Simple cysts are thin walled and only contain fluid. These are not cancerous. A complex ovarian cyst can raise a suspicion of malignancy and so usually needs to be assessed further. But as well as the look of a cyst, the risk of cancer is assessed by other things like the CA 125. So although there may be a suspicion of malignancy, it is by no means a certainty.

I realise waiting for results when you are worried is stressful. But hopefully it won’t be too long until the results of the CA 125 test are back and your doctors can tell you more.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. If you would like to speak to one of the nurses to talk this through further, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040.  We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

Best wishes,

Celene

Hi Happy

my CA125 came back negative so just wondering how reassured I should be by that? My doctor said it was good news but I’m still finding it hard not to panic.

I have another scan tomorrow to see if the cyst has changed in anyway.

Any advice appreciated.

Hello Bridget15,

Thank you for getting back to us with another question.

I am very pleased to learn that  your CA125 blood test result came back within the normal range.. This makes it unlikely that anything too serious is wrong.  But very occasionally a woman with a normal CA125 will have ovarian cancer. So a normal test cannot rule it out completely.

Waiting for tests investigations and the results can be very stressful, hopefully you will soon know a little more about your situation. And I hope that it goes well for you.

All the best,

Jean

Hi

I was just wondering how you got on with your complex cyst... I have just had a scan of which I was told I too have a complex cyst on my left ovary. .. I insisted on the scan with my GP as he was reluctant to send me,  I yad a bad back but had a UTI also ... So sent me for a ultrasound on my kidney's.... which resulted in a scan on my ovaries.

I've have an appointment on Wednesday and wondered what to expect...

Xxx

Hello Beachgirl,

Thanks for posting a question. I thought that I would get back to you as Patsy15 has not replied. As she posted last year, Patsy may no longer be using the forum and hopefully this means that she is OK.

Waiting for tests investigations and the results can be very stressful and so I can appreciate that this must be a worrying time. But as we said previously, a complex ovarian cyst is one that contains solid material. These cysts need to be examined in more detail as occasionally they can be malignant (cancerous). But often they are not.

I cannot really offer you in the way of advice about what will happen when you have the appointment as there is not a one size fits all answer. The specialist will take into account  a number of different factors when working out what needs to be done. They may suggest that you need further tests . Sometimes  the specialist will suggest monitoring over a period of time to see if anything changes. So there is nothing for it but to wait and see what they have to say.  Hopefully you will find out more when you have your appointment

Do get back to us if you have any other questions.  If you would like to telephone  the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Kind regards,

Jean

Hi Beachgirl,

So sorry for late reply - I haven’t posted for a while so couldn’t remember my password.

Yes, I was diagnosed with a complex ovarian cyst back in October 17. It wasn’t particularly big ( 2.5 cm, or thereabouts)  but still very worrying.

The cyst was found after I had an episode of post menopausal bleeding ( I was 54 )  so what with my age, the PMB, &  the discovery of  a complex cyst I was referred straight to a gynaecologist at my local hospital - I also had the ca125 blood test which thankfully came back negative -.although the ca125  test isn’t a ‘yes or no’ definite answer,  a high result  ( above 35 )  will indicate more urgent tests are needed.

In my case, due to the low ca125 & the cyst being less than 5cm my hospital took a ‘watch & wait’ approach.

I was monitored for a year, I had a blood test and an ultrasound every 4 months & can now happily say the cyst has gone!

So I am living proof that complex cysts can, & do, disappear

it was an awful year though I must say, waiting for test results & the endless worry is very draining - but there really is no easy way around it, you just have to keep going ( & keep busy ! )

The nurses on this forum have been magnificent & really helped me through, both via this cancer chat forum and over the phone.

I never thought I’d find myself here.

I’m going to live life to the full now & take nothing for granted, because I could have been one of  the 7000 women a year who is sadly diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

With much love,

patsy.

Hello there, just a quick question.. i am wondering how you have managed to get an opperation booked so quickly? Where do you live? And is this on the nhs? My experiance so far i have had different cysts for years but recently found a complex cyst that is possibly cancerous and the NHS are making me wait untill the end of January 2019 for another check up! It was found in september 2018 and the sonographer said it was very serious and will need a biopsy asap. Just cant get my head around how long they are making me wait.. also iam VERY symptomatic and have been admitted to a ward for high white cell count then sent home!
