Coming home after bladder removal

Can anyone tell me what the day to day procedure is when i get home after bladder removal. Thank you

From Ronnie

  • Hello

You should get full information before you are discharged from hospital about how to look after yourself, any help that has been arranged for you, and what to expect when you come home.  You may also have been given the number for a specialist nurse who you can contact if you have detailed questions.

A lot will depend on the type of surgery you are having, there is information about this on our website here  about the different types of surgery and on what to expect afterwards.

If you need a urinary diversion of some kind there will be help and guidance in dealing with this from the staff at the hospital and through the community nursing service.

Usually I wouldn't expect the hospital to send you home until you were in a position to care for yourself or had enough help at home if you needed it.  When you are in hospital ask the staff about what plans will be put in place when you go home.

It might also be a good idea to have a discussion with your GP about what support they may be able to offer you when you come home.

Regardless of the type of surgery you have, most people will feel quite tired for a few weeks after surgery so it would be good to plan ahead, if you have a freezer make sure it is stocked with meals that are easy to prepare and talk to family and friends about getting help with shopping and household chores.

Usually there will be a follow up appointment at the hospital a few weeks after you are discharged to check that everything is going as expected.

I hope this has been helpful

  • I'm sorry no-one has told you whether you need to stop taking your aspirin before your operation on Thursday Ronnie. This must be a very stressful situation to be in.

Our cancer nurses do not work at the weekend but they will get back to you as soon as they can in the next couple of days but if you were hoping to get some advice about this today you could try ringing the NHS on 111.

We're thinking of you Ronnie and wishing you all the best for Thursday.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Ronnie and thank you for getting back in touch.

I am afraid that we cannot advise you about the aspirin and whether you need to clear your bowels out. This information has to come from the team doing your surgery.  To be clear about what you need to do you might want to contact them. If they have given you a telephone number you could call them.  If you have a clinical nurse specialist you could call him or him/her and ask,  you may need to leave a message but someone will get back to you.  Or you could contact your doctors secretary (via the hospital switchboard) to ask.

I hope you get the information you need and that the surgery goes well.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • It's ok i found out i had to stop it 2 day before. Thanks anyway

  • Thank you for the info but i dont think he should be traveling 26 miles to see a doctor 2 weeks after a cystoscopy and 82 years old. They will have to come to him.
