Hi,I would just like to say that I’m 5 months post mastectomy without reconstruction,my problem is I have constant pain in chest wall and stiffness also cording, even bras are hurting me on that side,my shoulder is also sore which makes it difficult to do the exercises, any advice please,

  • Hi Charley

    Thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear you are still having pain - that can be quite exhausting.

Some people do have pain for some time after surgery. It can take quite a while for pain around the chest wall to settle after a mastectomy. The tissues are still repairing and it can take a good period of time for the nerves to grow back .

A supportive vest can sometimes be more comfortable than a bra - it's important to have a well fitting bra and you may want to get a proper fitting now it's some time after your surgery. You might want to have a look at this link for more information.

If you haven't already done so, it may be a good idea to have a chat with your breast care nurse (if you have one) or specialist. They can review your pain and make sure you are taking appropriate painkillers. He/She may also be able to refer you to a physiotherapist for an assessment .The physio may be able to suggest some exercises which can also help with cording.

The Breast Cancer care website has more information here on support available after treatment for breast cancer.

Do give us a ring here on the helpline if you would like to go over any of this information. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

  • Hi,thankyou for replying,I have been in touch with the physio and just waiting for an appointement,I have also bought quite a few bras trying to get one I’m comfortable in,the problem is the whole bra moves to the left with having no right breast, also the prosthesis shows slightly outside of the cup, have even tried tape,it really gets me down, others don’t seem to understand how I feel, they say I look fine, but I do think my self lucky as there are much worse people out there, still early days so I hope I will eventually get used to it,my problem is I’m so used to being in pain with a different condition that I just put up with it,so I will just have to take pain killers regular to keep myself pain free, thankyou again, xxx
