Cervical skin sample doesn’t match smear result

Hi,
I had my smear end of December which showed HPV and low grade dyskaryosis. I had my colposcopy at the end of January. I have this week received a letter advising that the result of my cervical skin sample doesn't match my smear test and therefore the test results will require further review at the multidisciplinary team meeting next week and following this an appropriate management plan will be made and I will receive a telephone consultation to discuss the outcome etc. I am extremely worried as when you search this, it comes up a lot to do with cancer etc and next steps, but I have been thinking surely if it was anything serious they wouldn't leave it until weeks later and ring me. Has anyone had a letter like this following their smear and colposcopy?
thank you

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I can appreciate your concern but this can happen.  This is because the smear test you had was just that a smear of the cells that line your cervix, an abnormal result is called dyskaryosis. At colposcopy you had a biopsy to check the cells but this was a tissue biopsy which means that tissue was removed and looked at, an abnormal result is called cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). They are two different types of tests that can give different results.

This still does not mean you necessarily have cancer and is more likely to show that the level of abnormality has changed. We have more information about abnormal cervical on our website here

Discussing your case at MDT means that the specialist medical team can review all your tests and results and decide what needs to be done. As I have said this being done doesn't mean you necessarily have cancer, but you might need treatment to prevent you from getting it. If this is the case then you may find it helpful to read information about how abnormal cells are treated, you can see this on our website here

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
