Hi, my name is Shan. I am 59 years old and I am so confused about my medical situation right now I don’t know which way to turn. Sorry this may turn out to be a long message. In July 2016 after a routine pap smear, my medical provider found abnormal results. I was told that I would have to have another pap smear one year later because of the findings. One year later, I had two different doctors try to get results from a pap smear but my cervix was closed, they tried a colposcopy and that didn’t work so they did a Leep procedure and found stage 3 dysplasia. So after a year and a half later they decided that I needed a total hysterectomy. I had the hysterectomy and they found two microscopic cancer spots in my cervix after removal. One spot was 4.9 deep into the cervical wall the other one was not a concern. Because they found cancer cells so close to the cervical wall they gave me two options for treatment. One is to set off a nuclear explosion in my pelvic area with radiation which could leave me with severe medical problems for the rest of my life or have another surgery which could be very risky and have my lymph nodes removed. At this point I am cancer free but because they found cancer in my cervix they want me to agree to this overkill radiation treatment. I have a rare case, there is no data or clinical trials to tell them what to do. I feel that they are just experimenting with me. It has been hard to make a decision, they are really pushing the radiation but it does feel like the right answer. I have grandchildren and I want to be able to play with them, I am still very active and the thought of possibly being disabled over this isn’t quite working for me. Please let me know if anyone out there has ever been in this situation.
