Cervical cancer? 2ww Appointment

Hi everyone,

I went to my GP on Thursday as I've been experiencing bleeding after sex and painful sex for some time. She had a look in my nether regions and said she could see a cervical ectropion, took some swabs and has referred me via the 2 week wait pathway to gynaecology.

Can anyone tell me what happens at this appointment please? I've found some info but it's not all helpful so would like people's personal experiences. I'm fully expecting I'll need to have another examination which is fine but would like to know what else happens and if I need to prepare myself for anything.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hi bw04

I too was referred to a gynaecologist on the 2 week pathway and wasn’t sure what to expect. First of all he asked a number of questions about symptoms, family history and general health and he asked me what I would like him to do that day. I asked him to do as much as he could in one appointment.

So I had a hysteroscopy, which is where they put a camera into your womb, and then several punch biopsies of my cervix. I didn’t have any anaesthetic for these tests, and they weren’t painful...only a little uncomfortable I would say. He did say this was as much as he could do in that appointment and without an anaesthetic. The nurses were lovely and chatted all through it, and one held my hand! But I was fine. I did bleed afterwards, but I had been bleeding anyway so not sure how much was caused by the procedures I had done.

It may not be the same for you...I was there because of post menopausal bleeding and pelvic pain, so you may not have these procedures done. I expect the gynaecologist will want to take a look at the very least. But good luck, and hope things go well for you. x
