Cervical Biopsy Results

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help with my query regarding biopsy results? I had a high grade changes at my last smear, had colposcopy and biopsy almost 3 weeks ago and they said they removed the affected cells at that time and I would receive my results in the post in about 2-3 weeks.

This morning I received a letter from my GP saying they'd tried to contact me several times (must have wrong number) and to phone the surgery. I'm panicking because I thought I would just get the all clear in the post. I've been worried as it is as I hadn't had a smear for 17 years prior to this.

How do people usually get results? This has totally thrown me and it's a holiday weekend so I'm not going to find out until Tuesday now.

On one hand I'm thinking it must be bad as they've been trying to phone instead of just the usual results in the post. On the other I'm thinking if the results went to the hospital first and it was bad the gynaecologist would have phoned? And I know they have the right number.

Sorry for waffling, I'm just hoping someone can shed some light as to whether this is likely good or bad news? I'm in Scotland, not sure if it's the same process throughout the UK.

  • Hi Cookie334 and welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately no-one here will be able to tell you what this means but the good news is that Tuesday is almost here so you will find out very soon.

As you've found out, waiting for results is tough but you're not alone as many of our members have gone through this so will understand how you're feeling at the moment and will hopefully pop by soon to offer their support and advice.

    Fingers crossed for tomorrow Cookie.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious.  I hope by now you have got an answer as to why the doctor was trying to contact you.

There may have been many reasons and it is quite difficult to second guess.  Often GP's like to talk to patient's  directly and they don't leave messages because they need to make sure that they are speaking to the right person.

Do give us a ring after you have spoken to your doctor if you would like to discuss this.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
