Caring for my mum, what to expect

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I am caring for my mum who has breast cancer for the second time. At the moment it is inoperable but she is due to start chemotherapy very soon and I feel quite unprepared. She lives alone and I am mot sure what help she and I might need and will I need to give up work to care for her. The first time round she didn't have chemotherapy so I don't really know what to expect. Any advice greatfully received. Thanks

  • Welcome to the forum Rose although I'm sorry to hear your mum has breast cancer for the second time.

I'm sure other members who have cared for their loved ones with this diagnosis will be along soon to share their advice and experiences with you but I just wanted to make you aware of the coping practically section on our website as well as as our cancer nurses telephone number in case you wanted to chat to someone about this. Their freephone number is 0808 800 4040 and are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m so do give them a call when you can as they will be able to discuss your situation with you and help you figure out what help you and your mum may need at this time.

I hope this helps and that your mum's chemotherapy goes well when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Rose,

so sorry to hear about your mums recent diagnosis, I have seen my mum through great cancer twice and unfortunately a brain tumour which lead to her passing away in July 2016.

The best advice I can give is to let you know that having chemotherapy will leave your mum feeling very unwell at times, you can expect nausea, and or vomiting, your mum may suffer from a sore mouth, she will be very tired at times, and will probably lose her appetite and her hair.

I remember mum mums taste buds went funny so trying to get her to eat something was difficult, I think she opted for a lot of curry’s so she could taste them. It will depend on the strength of the chemo and how long she is to have it for.

I gave up work to look after my mum, but not everybody does. This may be something you can discuss woth your mums cancer consultant and or nurse.

    I hope I have helped a little.

    Take care

    karen. Xx
