Mine weren’t bothered. I found out the hard way tho, some drunken bovine down the road rear ended my car and as was old, the Insurance company wrote it straight off. They knew I was going to radiotherapy each day and altho my cover didn’t include a hire car, they arranged it anyway. 

I left driving for about a month. The general advice seemed to be that you have to be able to do an emergency stop but there are variations so ring them as you said.
