Capecitabine loss of app

Hi all,

My Mum is has just started her seconds cycle of capecitabine 14 on 7 off and she is on day 3. Her loss of appetite seems to be getting worse and worse and becoming a worry she constantly feels bloated! Do you think it’s something she needs to make her oncologist aware of? She keeps saying “I’m just not hungry” she is currently taking 20mg MST in the AM and PM we was only made aware that she had liver metastases due to it being inflamed a few weeks ago and the unbearable pain she sustained! Due to this dosage of MST could this be masking the fact that potentially this may have become inflamed again? (However last week her oncologist was over the moon with her bloods) so I’m guessing had her liver been inflamed that should of been picked up in the blood tests :/ xx

  • Hi Cubbs,

Your Mum should have been given a number to phone in case she had any problems or questions. It would be worth ringing them and asking these questions there. They will be more than happy if she rings, rather than waiting for her next scheduled appointment. They will have access to her recent blood results which might help answer your questions.

I stupidly didn't ring under similar circumstances during my first round of chemo and ended up suffering side effects which were quite easily solved.

Capecitabine is renowned for making you feel utterly lousy, it certainly had that effect on me. The good news is that it is very effective and worth persevering with, I'm sure I wouldn't be here now if not for it.

    Good luck

    Dave

  • Hi Dave,

after badgering Mum she caved and called the hospital and they advised her it’s perfectly normal as long as she is eating and has her appetite back on her 7 days off then there is no worry!

Im glad it worked for you and your on the mend :)

fingers crossed for Mum it works all good so far she’s just very tired.
