Can I claim pip for having chemo?

Can I claim pip for having chemotherapy on my lungs n also get a permit for hospital parking

  • Hi Walter if you have or had C you are classed as disabled, blue badge you have to go through the local council, they should send you a form to fill in once you get in touch with them. Pip I'm afraid I don't know. You still have to pay at most hospitals now, when having cemotheropy most hospitals zero the payments. Hope that helps a bit.

  • Hi Walter575,

I don't claim PIP but I know many patients who have and it seems to be a minefield. Firstly, are you under the State Pension age? If not, you aren't eligible to apply. If you are, here is the eligibility criteria www.gov.uk/.../eligibility

You will see from this that the first part of eligibility to apply is to have had difficulty with your daily living or getting around for 3 months. AND expect these difficulties to continue for at least 9 months (unless you are terminally ill with less than 6 months to live). The second part lists the type of daily tasks you must need help with or problems with mobility to be eligible to apply. Please note that if you are eligible to apply it doesn't mean you will pass their stringent interview - I know several patients who are Stage 4 cancer patients with eligibility to apply but have failed the 'interview' process. It appears that, unless you have a terminal diagnosis and you can get your consultant or GP to complete a DS1500 form, you will find it difficult to get PIP.

If you can satisfy the first section of eligibility I suggest you contact Macmillan who are great at helping with benefit advice www.macmillan.org.uk/.../benefits-and-your-rights

I hope this helps & good luck,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
