Can I claim anything to help me get to the hospital?

I have just been diagnosed with follicular lymphoma and put on a watch and wait.

I broke my foot and had an op in march and can't get around.  I have to use ambulance and taxis to get to and from hospital.  My question is can I claim anything to help with the expenses?

  • Hi there ..

If you give McMillan a ring .. they maybe able to help or tell you if you can get help .. think there's a few things that get taken into account like what benifits your on .. and a few years back I did volentry work for them, and took a few to their treatment in my car ... but depends on area ..

    Hope that helps ... Chrissie  ; ))

  • Thanks. I'm not on benefits I work full time but am on sick pay at the moment, it doesn't go far either. Cost me £40 Last week to get to hospital in a taxi.

  • I am the same for my hopsital visits. I was sent to a different health authority because my GP said that i would be seen quicker but for 2 of those appointments i had to get a taxi £24 each way, i don't work and i am on benefits so i can't afford that on a regular basis but for my next visit, i asked for ambulance transport. When you receive an appointment letter you should also receive information outlining the patient transport details with a phone number to book it, you do have to go through a barage of questions from the person on the other end of the phone, in my case, an unhelpful & rude lady who spoke to me like i was a criminal and i had to justify why i thought i needed it. I got it in the end and on that visit although i was the first pick up of 3 and the last drop off, it helped me out greatly.

I know if you are on employment and support allowance at the income related level then you can claim travel expenses back at the hospital where they have a desk but i am not sure if they reimburse taxi costs. I should point out that i am in Scotland and the system may be different in other parts of the UK.
