Can I ask a question?

17 Sep 2019 22:38

I’ve just watched sink or swim on channel 4, one of the cancer stories was a young girl who had a mole that started growing, she had it removed but scans showed it was in her brain and bones.

I was diagnosed with BC in May, told it was a grade 1, I’d had no lump or symptoms of any kind so was a huge shock. I had my surgery and radiotherapy and that’s been it, I’ve not had any scans throughout the whole process.

My question is how do they know it isn’t somewhere else that hasn’t been found yet? My margins and nodes were all clear after surgery and the surgeon said you’re all good, I can’t stop worrying that it’s already somewhere else and this is what’s stopping me moving forward.

Thanks for reading x

Hi Ploppy

Good question - however we cant compare our diagnosis/prognosis to others without knowing their full medical history. Thankfully we dont need to as thats the job of our clinical teams. They decide the likelhood given the size, grade, type of cancer we have and treat accordingly. Yours was caught early and grade 1 is slow growing and least likey to spread. Try not to get too hung up on this and don't let it stop you from moving on - you didnt go through all of this just to sit and fret about the 'what ifs' - go live your life x

Thank you for your reply, I totally hear what your saying and I’m desperately trying to be positive, I was fine during all the treatment but now, my head just keeps overthinking everything.

Thanks Billy, I guess that’s the way to go, I need to enjoy today and worry about tomorrow when it gets here. Yes back at work, totally exhausted but good to have something else to focus on.

i hope you are keeping well x

morning babe, hope you are well? I think similar to you, I had bc stage 1, lymph nodes clear, lumpectomy and radiotherapy, I went for my 6 week check yesterday where the oncologist had a feel and asked questions, everything was ok and gotta see her again in 6 weeks. I was messaging Jackie who is on this forum last night and said the same thing cos you do sometimes read about people getting secondary cancer, i understand how you feel but I feel that you can’t live your life worrying about it, we’ve got through what life dealt us and I don’t think it does you any good thinking about it all the time otherwise we will never move forward, we are survivors babe xx

Hi Georgie,

Thanks for your reply, so glad all was good with your check up, I've got mine in two weeks so I'm hoping that will put my mind at ease, radiotherapy finished and that was it.

Thanks again x

Hi babe, they want to see me again in 6 months so that puts my mind at rest too. How are you after your radiotherapy? Xx

Hi

I think after experiencing cancer, 'our heads overthinking everything' unfortunatly becomes the norm for us. I too have recovered from cancer twice and it does stop us moving on.

Any tips welcome.

Hi Ineedabreak,

sorry to hear you’ve gone through this twice, can I ask what cancer you had? But also how amazing that you beat it twice x

Hi

I had bowel cancer.

First time just needed surgery, second time (after 3 years) surgery followed by chemo because just one of lots of lymph nodes was positive.

Hi ploppy don't know if you realised but I'm uncurable so I've got to keep relaxed or I'd finish up in an institution, it is coming back i just have to live with my uninvited guest, hope you can relax a bit more over time best wishes. For the future.. Billy
