I was recalled after mammogram and had calcifications in both breasts. The radiographer thought they looked normal but had biopsies taken just in case. Upshot was high grade DCIS in both breasts, had to have surgery etc. As you say not all calcifications are DCIS so hopefully yours will come back benign.

thank you magpiemaggie. What surgery did you need? I don’t have regular mammograms as I am just 46 so they don’t become available till your 50 it’s just that I noticed a change in size of my breast. Thank you for your reply

I was offered either breast reduction/reconstruction or mastectomies. I didn’t want either and opted for lumpectomies instead. It depends on how wide spread the disease is/size of area/size of breast etc that determines the surgical options offered by the surgeon. 

The type of surgery is a personal decision and I weighed up the pros and cons of each option.

Ok thank you. I have very small breasts that are dense whatever that means. I am very petite in size I don’t carry a lot of body fat as I have crohn’s disease too so that’s why I am small. 

I am not looking forward to my biopsies but they need doing and so it has to Be done. I have my appointment for my results for a week on Thursday so don’t have wait long to find out.

I also have dense breasts, it’s the reason why they didn’t spot the invasive cancer among the DCIS. I would always advise that if high grade DCIS is found then insist on a MRI, wish I had done so. Wishing you all the best for the forthcoming biopsies x

Hi Hayley ...

6 months After my masectomy,  i found two lumps under scar ... l had to go back to theatre under a local anasthetic ... they took both out and they were just calsifications ... so take heart not all lumps are cancer ... and been o.k since. . That was about a year ago now ..

Thank you Chrissie I’m not worried at all what will be will be i’m just not looking forward to my biopsies to be honest. I have crohn’s so I have had a few surgeries and lots of tests in the past but it’s different when it’s your boobs they are a sensitive area.

Please do, I found my biopsies to be relatively pain free tho it did take about a hour and a half for both breasts, plus one of my breasts bled. I developed a hematoma on the breast that bled and extensive bruising. I would recommend eating something beforehand as it can be a long day.
