Breathlessness

My partner has just finished 20 sessions of radiotherapy for lung cancer. His breathing is now worse than before he started treatment. Does anybody know if this is to be expected after treatment

  • Hi

radiotherapy can cause inflammation of the lungs as a side effect and steroids tablets help a lot,  please talk to his radiotherapist  about it , they are usually  very good at getting him seen by a doctor . Inflammed lungs can make youcough and also breathless

You must have a helpline number from the hospital he is receiving treatment,  please ring them and he will get sorted

Steroids tablets is usually given short time only

    Hope this helps

    Best wishes

  • Hi Freda

Im glad u got him in and better  , i take it the oncology team knows he has been admitted, if not let them know

i guess he got an infection, and happy it is settling, the antibiotics are really good , phew

A kind nurse once told me when i was very worried as admitted as emergency with severe infection n drips , she said eat well, drink well and rest , ull get better.  If your partner can eat , just eat n drink plenty anything he fancies except alcohol

Hope you are looking after yourself too, we are all human

    Hope you both get stronger

Sorry i check my mail at night

  • Hi Karina

I am not sure how things work here but he doesn't have a specific team in place yet. We started this on 18th January.

Will check with this nurse later on. His blood pressure is very low, but, typical male he is talking about coming hope. We are blessed with a huge circle of supportive friends and family. I am making the most of the break to be honest. Many thanks for getting in touch again

  • Hiya Freda

You are funny if i may say

Really there's no radio consultant in charge of his treatment,  he should have one and they usually review every two weeks to see if any side effects from radio

Yes i can relate to wanting go home, but i didn't until told to , well he must enjoy your company n animals (from yr username ) , ask the docs when they thinking of home , that may give him a boost  and throw in some nice homely  snacks to make it homely in hospital for him

As for his blood pressure,  is he drinking enough , if not it can lower  blood pressure

U can bring them tall big drink bottles,  the small cans  are too easily finished n leave it where he can reach,  sorry im sure you doing all this , i just thought in my case i found that things i could reach id grab otherwise id leave it when i was hospital

Im so glad you have a network, it makes it less lonely

Talk to the specialist lung nurse when you have time, he should have one from start , u can talkto them about anything and they will advise , ask if he can have a review appt when hes out of hospital

U like animals,  im thinking of getting a budgie to distract mind , hopefully he will say only nice wirds

Let me know how you get on...

    karina

  • Hi Karina, he is safely in hospital and still on IV antibiotics. Appetitie is improving and is getting more liquids. We have been told that this servere reaction is not totally uncommon after radio therapy on the lungs. I can tell that he is improving as he gave me a list of things to bring today. I stick to dogs because they can't answer back but actually a budgie is a great idea. You can teach it some nice polite words with a bit of luck. You take care Freda
  • Good morning

    u are so funny

yeahhhh great your partner is getting stronger,  and yes a list of stuff haha a good sign

I managed get a sore throat in the wrong week, i have be careful withinfection too

Ill opt for a budgie to keep company as they do challenge humans n err sorryyyy im one of the few not quite comfortable with dogs. ..a little pooch barked loudly at me in park ...think they know

Thank you for your mail , have a good day and lots smiles

    karina

  • Good morning Karina. hope you are geeling good today. It must be hard having an infection with everything else. At least you have the sense to gety treatment, unlike some ha ha.

And you are right, dogs - especially the small ones sense your discomfort and play up like crazy. Actually they are cowards but who is going t take that change when barking back as it were.

A budgie is a lot safer and less like to attack any one of your numerous neighbours because they wear what looks like a pyjamas. My two tried that trick last week, they are incredibly rascist sadly.

Hope you have a good day Karina.

    love and best wishes

  • Hiya

Thank you,  sorry was having not a good time with relentless cough n didnt view the mail

A bit better today n yes its hard im sure for your partner too, i vent out to my friend,  helps he works in mental health ...its not easy with family cos as they worry and we no spring chickens. .except younger bro

Did u say ur dogs racist, i didn't know that existed. ..ouchhhh

I hope you are well and that yr man is better n kicking infection out, it will take some time to get strength back but with a luvly lady like u , he will

    Good night

    k

  • Hi Karina. I am not too sure about the rascism but the dogs certainly have reservations about certain ethnic groups. I hope you are feeling stronger today. It is a tough journey but I know you will face it head on.

My partner is not being allowed home before Wednesday so while I do miss him, I am happy that he is being treated so well.

Between the good food, pretty efficient nurses and good fellow patients, I may just have to bribe him to leave lol.

    Lots of love

    Freda
